Indigo Bunting

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I got several shots of one of our Bunting the other night. SO rather than fill up the Daily Pics thread, I will put them on here.

This fellow spats at me whenever I go by on my walks. This pair is nesting closest to my house, so I believe them to be the ones that show up in my yard from time to time.

The first few shots were not great as he played hard to get!

Now these were taken around 7:15 pm. I have the dog on his leash in my left hand and camera in the right. Now add in that I have a mild case of vertigo and it requires all my concentration to try and get the shots! lol

5. It was really interesting to see the changes in color due to light as he moved around.

18 Last shot. There were several that had to be deleted as they were way to blurry. But he was so accommodating I can hardly complain! :)

I never had until last year when we moved here!! I had read about them and seen pic....but I was surprised that they are as small as they are and shocked at how blue some are!!

I so wish you could come here and see them!!

Nice shots Nanny.....looking forward to their stay here again next winter.

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

What wonderful pics!! I have a few of one visiting me this spring sitting atop the cage of a feeder. Not near as nice as your pics though, as mine were thru my picture window and the Bunting less than 4 feet away. I wonder if mine is the same one that also visited during spring migration last year, (my first sighting of an Indigo Bunting). I live in the piedmont of the blue ridge and get a lot of warblers and others that few others in my area report, but there is a creek and a few acres of woods around my house, that is sort of atypical for Winston-Salem lately.
I was captivated by the differend shades of blue as the differing light reflected from him. Some even show nearly black in a few small areas. Absolutely in awe!! Thanks so much for sharing, and a separate string was a great idea!

Nanny I'm so glad you weren't on a ladder! LOL What beautiful birds the buntings are. I've never seen one either. How small would you say they are? Tiny like a wren? goldfinch?

Seems to have a little crest on his head. My fav is #18, the glancing over the shoulder pic.

Sweet shots Nanny! I've never had one sit still long enough for that many shots and they are all beautiful!! Don't you just love their song...it's just so happy!

Now I'm really dying to see and hear one!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

OP, they are goldfinch size...for some reason in my mind I had expected them to be a little bigger! They don't so much have a crest but they can make it stand up a bit

Rose, I just love their happy little song. I will miss them and the House Wrens when they leave.

Thanks everyone, I am so glad you enjoyed the photos.

Nanny..I will miss them too when they go back to GP in Florida for the Winter!! They are such a delightful little bird...I have had fledges coming to the feeders lately! They are so cautious at first and look like they are sneaking around!! LOL!!

PERTH, Australia

Stunning little bird, nanny. Thanks.

Wonderful pix, nanny! Thank you SO much for posting them! I've never seen an indigo bunting in person, but I really hope to, one day. They are gorgeous. You've made my day. ;D
