My hen has had a prolapse can anyone help with any advise

london, United Kingdom

Chalkie the hen has had a prolapse, i have read my books and the advise is to clean the vent with antiseptic, lubricate the vent then gently push back inside.
I have tried this 5/6 times but each time she strains, it pops back out. I am so worried and wonder if anyone has any advise, or should i just have her put down.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

oh, i wish i knew what to tell you, you already know more about this than I do. have you done the warm bath etc? tried a different lubricant? i would do anything possible before putitng her down. is she in a warm dark palce, separate from the others, and off her feed?

london, United Kingdom

I have tried a different antiseptic this evening , but havent seperated her from the others, is that a must?, she is not off her food, she totally fine except for the vent out.

Push it back in and try Preparation H. They others will want to peck it if they notice the prolapse and that can put her into shock. I think I remember reading some other ways to help with this. I'll check.

Thanks Tamara, have tried prep H now, and it is evening so ive put her straight in her perch for the night, hopefully tommorow will see some improvement. she is a large bird,so im thinking she has laid a massive egg and strained too hard, the books im reading are not too informative if prep h doesnt work. Im starting to feel like a vet these days.
Hooter the poorly hen has survived until now , but the infection is back in the other side of her face, shes closing the eye completely and i think it may be time to say goodbye to her as it must be painful and i cant be having that !.
I wipe her eyes daily but cannot shift the infection, sad isnt it.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i suggested to take her off her food for a few days to allow healing, and prevent pooping..

do the best you can, they will be OK.

tf

look in an herb book to see what would be recommend for people in these cases, then apply according to the appropriate size of the birds...

Have you tried antibiotics for her, cookiemonster?

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Have you tried the Opthalmic ointment for her eyes?? It usually has Bacitracin and Neomycin in it...

I didn't know hens could get prolapsed but it sure makes sense that they can. I have no idea how to fix it on a hen......on hope the prep H works. For sure keep her from the other chickens though....they will peck at her there. I know on cows when they prolapse the odds of recovery are not very good, but they can recover. The situation is much different here though. On a cow the uterus is put back in, then sewn in place with a couple of stitches and in some cases the outside is then partially sewn up as well, allowing just enough room for urination. Not really sure if this is very practical for a chicken though.

Is there any way to put maybe a cut down band aid, cut length wise across a part of the vent, but not completely covering it. I was just thinking that maybe that might help hold it in until it can heal? Like tf said, if you take her off feed she will not poo as much. You are going to have to get antibiotics for her.....the antiseptic can only do so much cleaning with any other dirt or bacteria going back into her and if she can make it through this the odds of her developing an infection are very high.

I hope something I've said helps you in some way. I sure hope Chalkie pulls through!

How is Chalkie doing today? I was talking to my DH about this and he reminded me of something else that could be done. For a cow with this problem we would fill a big shoulder vet ob glove full of ice and put it in her. This helps with the swelling and shrinks the area as well. The ice also works to hold it all in until it melts.

I was thinking that you could use the finger of a rubber glove or even a baggy and of course a not too horribly big ice cube......just big enough to stay in for a little while but not big enough to cause further damage. I imagine that she will be squawking a bit if you do this or the other chickens will chase after the baggy sticking out, so I would keep her away from everyone else.

sounds like that might work!

preperation h should do the trick it usually does unless it is an extreamly bad case of it. they have to be kept seperated from the flock and kept where it is dark and warm so they don't lay. do not take her food from her she needs it!! keep pushing the insides back in and applying it and in a few days to a week she should be fine. a cold bag of ice against her bottom wouldn't hurt either but she will freak, lol. the preperation h should shrink it back to normal size and she should be fine but u need to do everything u can to avoid her laying right away or it will come back out again. she also needs to be isolated so she is not bred and the others can't peck at it.
hope that helps,
silkie

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

ooops didn't know she would need fee, thought if you withheld feed she would stop laying.. and pooping. hope she is betrter soon...

I know with humans, we cut back on solids to give the digestive tract a break when there are problems (severe), so I would think maybe just a liquid diet, wouldn't that help to keep her from laying also?

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

I was a little torn on the feed thing too. I know with cows we get them to eat when they will so they can keep up their energy. With chickens I was thinking they have only one way to get rid of waste, so where I thought she would need her food for energy, I was also worried about her putting more stress on the vent by voiding.

Silke......will the hen be able to lay eggs normally again? I've been wondering and wondered if anyone really knew.

Cookiemonster....I sure hope she has made it this far!

Christy

the reason i said no to takeing the feed is cuz if u take it chickens will stress and they will loose weight. it is to easy to deprive them of what they need to grow and be healthy and they will starve to death.

mabe lower the calcium intake. like seperate her and feed a lower calcium diet without calcium or lower they lay softer shells or not at all. usually just a quite place that is dark will stop them from laying cuz they depend on daylight hours for cycleing.

i believe they can still lay normal as long as the insides stay in and r attached and the preperation h works. however sometimes when it is a severe enough case of it and it doesn't correct it's self they r prone to be eggbound and it doesn't correct it's self they continue to get eggbound. sometimes they r so bad and the worst and the female parts just comepleately fall out totally, i can't remember what it is called. in a sence it is a hysterectomy(sp), the insides just detatch and basically she lays all her reproductive organs instead of an egg. they can die if it is the worst one but not always sometimes they just pass them and r fine as long as they don't get an infection.

i hope that answered what u were asking cuz i didn't know quite how to put it,lol.

Foley, MO

Wow, that can happen in humans too. All just falls out the urethra.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

yeah, but in humans they don't get cock-feathered afterwards...

SC, that mkaes perfect sense. i always wondered why a dark place, thought it was just to keep them calm, but of course that should stop the laying long enough to help heal...

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

holy cow!! i didn't know that could happen in humans, ugg that hurts just thinking it can happen. i can't think cuz it is late, i got a migraine and i'm beat after a very long day but hens need so many hours light each day or they do not cycle to make the egg. 10 or 14 hours something like that i can't remember at the moment, lol.

on cloudy or dark days or rainy my girls will not lay, most will not lay through winter but some do speratic all winter due to the shorter days and not so many light hours. to up laying or increase it u add heat lamps or artificial lighting so many hours a day to give the extra light so they keep laying. putting them where it is dark or darker is suppost to do the opposite to prevent laying. kinda like season changes except we control it rather than mother nature.

takeing food from them for a shortened time as far as i know only force molts them but u have to be very careful and know what u r doing and for how long or they could get sick or possible die like i said above..

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

I didn't know that could happen to people until I married into my DH's family. His grandma had 18 pregnancies in 20 years.....15 babies and 3 miscarriages and she had this happen. Yep, her insides came out. They had to put this ring type of thing.....errrrr, 'up there' to hold it all in. Every now and again, the ring would come out and so would everything else, so back she would go to have it reinserted. I'm telling you, I'm sure glad it wasn't me. Goodness, what that woman must have lived through!

and to think they call us the "weaker sex". Love to see what would happen to men if they had periods, pregnancies, cramps, ect, ect, ect..... I can hear the whining from here. What do they get, prostate problems, E.D.? LOL ; ) Gotta love 'em though.

gotta.

well....most the time : )

Sadly chalky didnt make it, wont go into the gorey details but in the end i took her to an old man who is v knowledgeable about chickens and he suggested it would be kinder to put an end to her misey.

thanks for your advise everyone.

on a happier note Hooter the hen with the infected eye is still on the scene, she too went to see the old man and the advise he gave me was that she had sinusitis, his advise was slit under the eye with a sharp knife and squeeze the eye hard to drain the liquid, Ive tried this but cant seem to cut deep enough as only getting blood out, anyone any advise. I thought he would say put her down, but no he said she should be fine.

Also the two new bantoms both should have been female and this morning i awoke to a cock a doodle doo and by golly ones a cock.
I am not going to take it back to the breeder as he said all cocks are killed!, It looks like im going to have to keep him away from the other girls also have to be careful of the noise as the neighbours will be complaining.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Sorry to hear about chalky. Sometimes there's nothing else we can do.

Would the old man be willing to perform this for you? I've got to say I don't know if I'd have the stomach to do it myself. Hope she's well soon.

I had the same experience with the bantams! I ordered 6 st. run silkies(that's the only way the hatcheries will sell them!). One passed a couple of days after I received them and the remaining turned out to be all roos!! One of them crows until 11:30 at night! Hope yours is a quiet little man.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

sandy my pet chicken sells silkies by sex or st run.. just an fyi for the future.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Thanks, frans! Oh I wish I knew that this past spring! That's ok-I love my little roos!

wish you lived closer.. I love mine too but still have 4 too many.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

I'd love to pick up RI and move it closer to everyone!

Sorry to have hi-jacked your thread, cookiemonster!

I'm assuming that your neighbors don't like the sound of crowing. Is there anyway of bribing disgruntled neighbors into toleration?
