found it in jamaica it fell from a tree and hit my head was about 3 inches in length, pretty heavy too

This beetle is in the family Buprestidae (metallic wood-boring beetles; some species are called jewel beetles), likely Euchroma gigantea, a species reportedly relatively common in forested areas in the Caribbean - see http://www.mongabay.com/images/peru/manu/Manu_1024_2916a.jpg for an image..
