when to harvest green beans

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum. It is also my first attempt at growing green beans. I have quite a few baby beans and am wondering when is the best time to pick them? And if I pick them young, will the same plant grow more beans? (Can you tell I'm clueless?) TIA for any advice!

If they are pole beans they will continue to produce, but if bush-beans, there is usually only one crop.

We prefer to pick ours when we can just see the bean shape in the pods - so young & tender.

I am no expert, in fact, this is my first year growing bush beans! They have been continuing to produce for months.. I pick them when they are about 4" long.. they are small, but I love the tender sweet taste. They are good at 6" long (or longer) too.. but if the beans inside get too big, they are kinda tough.. I gather a double handfull every couple of days.. I put them in a plastic bag in the fridge till I have a full bag.. (only a few days or they will wilt)

I don't have any pole beans yet.. but after bending, stooping and squatting to pick green beans every couple of days.. I may soon convert..LOL

Your beans look great to me! (newbie) LOL I'd pick those quick... LOL

Congrats!

nice beans!

yeah, when i was a kid, one year it was my responsibility to pick the bush beans. seemed like there was no end in sight to their production and i spent many more days than i wanted out picking those things. we had piles and piles and piles of them. so my guess is that you'll have beans for a while. take a close look at the plants and you'll probably see buds where more are growing.

enjoy! i planted six this year but they still have a few weeks to go.

Those beans in your photo - I'd pick them today. Except for the one at the top, I'd pick that one yesterday. I like them before you can see the shape of the seed in the pod, for maximum tenderness.
