I don't want to seem pushy or anything, but how about a new hoya of the month? It's been awhile and I, for one, would LOVE to hear from anyone about any species....Carol, didn't you mention you might take on the verticillata group?? Anyone??? Thanks :-)
Shelley
how about new HOM??
HAHAHA YES, I remember that... In the meantime all my verticillatas have found to be H. acutas! Go figger!!!
What a great idea and I support it 100%. Alas...I would only have time to copy something off another website at this point....really busy and working with 50% capacity!!!
WHAT IF? we (someone) decided upon a subject like: planting mediums & watering, hanging/trellising, potting and repotting, temperature tolerances, greenhouse and other alternatives, etc. We all agree THAT subject is to be talked about and that any questions and chats about it would go to another thread. Like PLANTING MEDIUMS and then another thread PLANTING MEDIUMS-DISCUSSIONS. I would be glad to start it off.....At the end, the subject thread could be made a sticky thread and contain lots of information for all of us. As everyone has different growing conditions a new grower could find the conditions most similar to their own and get a lot of good information.....
IF there is enough interest, I think it would be interesting. For instance: Awanda lives in a very dry arid hot in summer cold on winter nights yet grows beautiful hoyas in her greenhouse (and she has been thru a few) and in her home. ... her growing conditions and how she copes would be very helpful.....
What say you?
Yes, please!!
The more information, the better for everyone.
I am always looking for light requirements for my Hoyas.
What would be most helpful, for me anyways, is a list of Hoyas and where they came from. That would allow everybody, no matter where they live, the ability to try to duplicate that environment as close as their areas allow.
3Gs...OK. A start. Finding where they come from is interesting....but what is more interesting and helpful is: were they found growing in an open field, in the understory of a rain forest, out on a rock by a river etc. ? This is not easy to find. Also, when hoyas are found in their habitat...few look like the ones we have in our collections!!! For instance...I have H. pubicalyx growing up palm trees in full sun and while they bloom massively, they look horrible!!!!! But, they love it, apparently and have adapted. If anyone has David Liddles sales list, you will have where the hoyas come from. Also Ted Green's online website http://www.rare-hoyas.com/Catalog.htm What is helpful is whether the area they were found is a single monsoon area (definitely wet periods, definitely dry periods) or a double monsoon area (rains all the time!)?
Exactly!!!
That is the information I crave for. WHERE were they found. What environment were they found in. What is the seasonal rainfall. Yes!!!
That would help everybody, everywhere.
I would love to see this.
Hopefully everyone will participate...not just 2 or 3 folks.
I know the information has been posted before...but as we get chatting, good information gets buried in thread of a totally different subject...which is normal. If we concentrated on the 'subject matter' we could centrally post it and make it available!
OK...will take some pictures today and stary out with Planting Mediums/Watering. I think they are easier to understand when written about together.... I will start them off and hope that all of us will post our experiences if feeling successful. Even the bad luck stories are interesting in the OOOOOps, I shouldn't have done that category!!!
Carol
