Baby Evening Grosbeak rescue

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

Yesterday a baby Evening Grosbeak flew into our window and landed stunned on the back porch. I cupped him in both hands for warmth and yelled to my DH to "get the camera". He brought the camera and took over the rescue operation. At first, the baby just sat there, glazed, with beak open, panting.

Starting to come to a little.

After I gave him a little water with an eye dropper, he moved to DH's arm.

Looked around as if listening for the rest of the family.

Looked at me as if to say "get that camera out of my face"

Took a short little flight to the railing and sat there a long time, as if contemplating his big flight.

Finally flew into a nearby apple tree and then flew away. Success!

Major oops! I mistyped this...he is a rose-breasted grosbeak, not an evening grosbeak. Thanks to OldNed for pointing it out.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

oohhhh! So cute. Glad you were there.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Wonderful pics and story, bebop. I have these frosty plastic maple leaves on my windows and have had a huge drop in fatalities and crashes here.

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

What fabulous pics! Where else but right here at Dave's could we be treated to such exquisite beauty and once in a lifetime moments? Thanks so much to DH for rushing with the camera & you BeBop for sharing your experience with all of us. I was especially touched at seing the feather detail and his beginnings of that georgeous Rose breast plate he will so majestically carry in his years to come. Wow!!
