stinky incubator dh wants to move it outside

Paris, TN

I have only had my guinea eggs in the bator for 3 days now and it stinks already don't know why I do have some dirty (not nasty) eggs in their but dh can't take it and wants to kick my bator outside. what would this do? Any ideas on why it stinks and should I try cleaning it?

Could be you have at least one bad egg. You would want to get the bad one out before it explodes and contaminates all of them. I've heard you can identify the bad one by sniffing each egg and you will know when you hit a bad one.

It might be very hard to keep the temp stable outside.

if you have a way to candle it, even a mag light in the dark, the bad one liely has a scarmbled yolk or a floating air cell or even a crack in the shell. so do a really good inspection, with clean dry, oil free hands, in good lighitng and in the dark.

there is no way it will work properly outside. if he insists you may as well just throw all the eggs in the trash...

I am sure I will get my way and the bator stay inside but I do want to get rid of the smell I also have silkie eggs on the way to put in there too that I actually paid for so I am not willing to waste my money he will just have to suck it up for a few weeks. I'll get me a maglight tomorow and try to candle and do the sniff test

OK, do you have a separate hatcher? your first eggs hatching could mess up , WILL mess up your silkie eggs...

so really, if your first eggs are stinky and dirty, maybe you should start over, clean the bator, and get ready for the silkies...

From what I have read here, i would agree with Tamara. Clean it up and start over.

just remembered they were guinea eggs. you should not try to incubate different types of eggs together, they have different requirements...

good luck!

I thought the temp and humidity requirements were the same so I guess I will start over fresh with my silkies granted they get here intact I guess I read that wrong. This is my first time and I am very nervous. I am down from 10 guineas to 2 in a month so I was really hoping that I could hatch some of their eggs. I had those guineas for over a year free ranging every day when all of a sudden my coon dog decided he didnt like them anymore.

oh gee, that is bad. maybe if you just get a hatcher set up for the chicken eggs to hatch separate...

maybe it is the actual bator
was it cleaned properly the last time it was used

I laid some mint leaves on top of the incubator this time. I needed to change them frequently as they dried out, but it worked. You could also put some scented oil or vanilla extract on a cotton ball on top in a little dish. The outside of the incubator is just warm enough to disperse the scent and it won't affect the eggs inside.

cool, wonder if bay leaves would o the same....

Cool, that's a good idea......good smell and not additional electricity!

I found my stinky bator was because of the sponge I had in the water dish to build humidity. I switched to a disposable napkin, and just put a new one in every couple days. Seems to work great.

ok what should I clean the bator with bleach or vinegar?
