Like many other gardeners, I know just enough about various veggie plants to be dangerous! Every year when I harvest my elephant garlic, there are always lots of these little tan corms attached to the bulb. They resemble a miniature garlic clove. I have been told that if I plant the corm, I'll get an elephant garlic "round" next year. My question is how do you plant these little corms? They're harder than a rock...do I nick them, or soak em in water first? By the way, the little point on these corms are sharp as a needle and they'll draw blood!
Elephant Garlic corms question
Hullo Lettuce man. I have been growing elephant garlic for years , or should I say they mostly grow themselves. I used to have a very big vege garden and those little cormlets are just marvelous. You can either harvest them when you collect your garlic or just leave them
more or less where they drop and let them look after themselves. Or you can collect them and sew them tidily in rows and separate from the cloves. I didn't soak mine just let nature do its thing. Over here they take up to 2 seasons to grow. If you want them smaller or can't wait dig one or two to see how big they are and if smallish just wait some more. They will grow to almost 4-5" across and are beautiful roasted. I have occassionally planted some of the balls when planting up cloves. I can honesyly say I don't know what they really do as I never remembered to mark them and they just get dug up eith the rest. In my new little vege garden I couldnt resist thrwing in some cormlets to do there own thing and I see they are coming up nicely so I am back in business. My own strain of garlic is about thirty years old now and that is mostly thanks to the little bulblets that I haven't lost them completely. Thinking back maybe its the balls that just divide in half. This is the first time I have ever put so much thought into them Usually just grow them save some eat the rest, oh and give some to friends who would forget to save some and eat them all. Happy gardening
Lesley.
