round up on daffodils

I should know the answer, but I don't. Your comments will be greatly appreciated. All the foliage on my daffs are completely gone and what I have left is a bare area with weeds. Could I give it a quick spray of roundup or must I resign myself to hand pulling the weeds?

Also, what plants have you used to overplant your daffs?

I guess that if your garden wants to wind up like mine after I sprayed Round Up around my Azaleas and then came the rain, I would have a customer that wants to buy new Daffodils. I lost 34 Azaleas that way and I know I did not spray it on the foliage. Since these Daffodils still have roots I would think you have to buy a Dutch Hoe and take care of the weeds that way.

I'll be watching this thread to see what others say.

Since I was seeing no postings, I took the proactive approach and called Scotts. Their help line rep said if the foliage is completely gone, they say it is safe to spray the weeds and it will not damage the bulbs underneath. They recommended the ready made version of Roundup for this application.

However, winds, or the situation with the rain like you experienced, Bleek, would damage any nearby plant material. And drift damage can be substantial. My husband was once spraying pasture located several hundred feet away from my shrubs and the drift nearly killed my ligustrums.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Hi Voss~

The Round-up will only kill plants that it is sprayed directly on. Absolutely no harm will come to your bulbs.

I have noticed that the specific target range for Round-up and Finale seems to be changing (is it my imagination?) and I have had much less "side-damage" from drigt or accidental spraying than ever before. So as a result, I am not so afraid of using it, *in general*, though I'm sure that many plants are sensitive to it.

For example, I *soaked* many Hemerocallis ("Day Lilies") with Finale and so either no damage at all to only slight browning when I wanted them gone gone gone.

Do be cautious, but if there isn't any foliage there, you're in the clear.

R.
