Questions about plant nuseries in Tampa, FL ...

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

... and/or Macon, GA area toward the end of this month. So, I want to make the most of my trip and visit a nursery or two while I'm in those 2 areas. Can anybody recommend some nurseries? I LOVE tropical plants - Plumerias, tropical hibiscus, vines, epis. Specifially, I would love to get Mickey Mouse plant or Nong Nooch Vine or some Plumerias. As if I need more container plants! Will they have tropical plants in those nurseries?

Have you tried looking in Go Gardening (under the products & sources tab if you're not familiar with it). That'll let you search for local nurseries in the areas you're going to be visiting, and frequently there'll be a few reviews from people who've shopped there. Or you might try the Florida forum too, could be there's not too many people from the Tampa area on here.

Thanks! I will try both of those.

The best place to start is Kerby's - http://www.kerbysnursery.com/ - in Mango. If you are looking for Plumeria, there is the Exotic Plumeria - http://www.exoticplumeria.com/ - which is only a mile or two from Kerby's.

I would suggest going down to Sarasota and seeing Crowleys nursery. They have a very wide selection of nice things, lots of vines & I have seen Nong Nooch there. A little bit of a drive, but well worth it. You can also stop at Tropiflora if you like bromeliads.

Lili--were you talking about the plumeria place? Many mail order nurseries also sell retail to local folks, if you scroll down a little bit on their webpage you'll see something about hours and map/directions.

The Exotic Plumeria does sell direct to the public. However, their level of customer service runs hot and cold. Sometimes you can go there in the middle of a business day and no one will wait on you. Other days, the owner will give you a personal tour of the nursery and the green houses. In any case, they have a great selection of plumeria.

Hehe. that describes them to a tee. If you go there with the mindset of just being there for the Plumerias, and put all expectations of service out of your head, you'll be fine.

If we have our general liability insurance in place by the end of the month, you're more than welcome to come visit us as well. We've been mail order for the last 6 years, but now that I'm making a go of it full time, we're opening by appt, as soon as the insurance is in place.
