To scale?

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi all!
okay I need to know what scale the fairy gardens are.... 1" = 1' ?? etc.
DH LOVES to make lil tiny furniture. He made me a model of our new arbor but used a scale of 1"=18".

where do you find the fairies and other stuff to put in the fairy garden? and what scale are they?

I can't answer the scale question. I do LOVE that arbor! WOW. Your hubby is a great builder, just gorgeous!

I bet he could build a wonderful fairy house.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

tee hee! He is all excited cause he finally has a 'reason' to build his models... but he just needs a 'scale' so he can build and sell em :o) we want to list some on the DG marketplace.

I bet everyone would love his designs!!!

Oh definately! I had a very hard time finding any suitable 'structures' for my mini-garden. I wanted to put in some sort of cabin, but after searching three stores and wasting way too much gas, I settled on a gazebo.

My gazebo sits about 3 1/2" high, and I guess a standard gazebo would be - what - 8' to 10' high? That would make my scale mabye 24:1

I am sure other people are using different scales. Might be nice to offer things in several sizes.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

well that at least gives me somewhere to start! lol!

where do you buy all the decorative items? at a craft store? are they for doll houses? maybe I can find what scale they are using for the other items and start from there....

I've been browsing around on Etsy lately, and there's someone there who sells sculpted figurines in 1/12 and 1/24 scale, and she made it sound like those are sizes that would go with people's existing collections of miniatures and that's why she uses those for her things. http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=86151

Look at the first thread for the links to look at for ideas for your hubby.

Go to Fairy Swap thread under Group Trades and Swaps. There is a long list of thread to see fairy items that might give you some ideas. They are posted by Fairy 1004.

oneanjl, I have been looking through all the lovely gardens posted since this site started and have successfully resisted starting one of my own until this point. The quality of your husbands woodwork is excellent and I would have a hard time not purchasing one to start my own garden.
I think you are right to find the right scale because that makes the tiny gardens really perfect little copies of our larger gardens.

When I attend the Philadelphia Flower Show they had a competition for miniature scenes that must include to scale live plants. It might be worth your while to look up their website and inquire about this competition to find what scale they use. I'm posting one of the miniatures from the show to give you an idea of what they look like. They are displayed behind glass in the wall.
They also had other miniature gardens in another area of the competition similar to the gardens created on this thread.
When I looked through the sites posted I found a 1" and a 1/2" scale for miniatures. I also noticed a lot of people were using the Cicely Baker fairies in their Fairy Gardens. You might want to purchase a few and see if you would like to base the scale on those.

edited to say: I can't seem to post the photo.I'll try again.

Aha Anjl I knew you would find your way over here. That little arbor is too perfect! Your husband is a genius. I still want that fingernail clipping for cloning purposes!!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

tee hee...nope he's mine! I'm still trying to figure a way to clone him myself! Imagine all the stuff I'd get done here! lol!

I will go check those sites! and thanks!
I'm just not letting him fool around with models til he gets my other 'real' arbor built and cement poured... then he can make models to his hearts content.... well till fall when we start the kitchen remodel! lol!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Ah come on, we need his models!! Your kitchen can wait--oops that didn't come from me did it? She who is complaing about her kitchen being so horrible!!!!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

tee hee.. I wish the kitchen could wait! been over due since way before I moved in! lol! Lets just say that the 'other' woman who lived here for years had a temper and a bad habit of hitting things with a hammer if they buzzed.... and we'll leave it to the imagination! lol!
I'm sure he'll have time to build models between the backyard, the kitchen remodel and then front yard next spring... there are lots of rainy nights in between those projects and he is jumping at the excuse to get into the 'shop' lol!

Finally I am able to post a photo of one of the mini environments.

WOW!!!! That is mini? SO PRECIOUS, wonderful.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

To perfect to be a mini. Wow!!!!

Joey in Conroe, TX(Zone 8b)

I wish my real life house looked that good!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

Don't we all?

Northern, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yes Sally, that's a mini environment from the Philadelphia Flower Show this past March. They are behind glass. All plants must be to the scale of the surrounding buildings,etc..
I'll try to post another.

Ah it make sense now.

Northern, NJ(Zone 6b)

Another view of the same environment. I am not sure of the scale ( somewhere in the dollhouse size) but they were all built in at eye level and you waited in line to see into each entry. The craftsmanship is incredible as is the use of plants to scale.

Are they live plants? Or models also?

South, TX

It is all unbelievable!

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

I do believe they have to be live plants. Isn't that correct?

Northern, NJ(Zone 6b)

All plants must be live. The winners not only had wonderful settings but abundant use of live plants to scale. On the wall beside the entry was a complete list of plants used. Each entry had extensive lists of plants. Since it was a flower show, not a miniature show the entry had to feature beautiful plants in excellent condition.

It was difficult to get good photos since they were behind glass.

edited to say: The judges comment on this one was positive over all but negative on the background painting if I remember correctly.

Oh wow - that is impressive!

Northern, NJ(Zone 6b)

I wish I had written down or photographed the plant list since it would have been useful in picking plants for our tiny gardens. Next year I'll be sure to note what plants were used.

I wish I was still close enough to go to the Philadelphia Flower Show! I lived in Harrisburg for over 20 years, and never went once :(
