Moon Signs BASICS

For plants that seed outside the plant, plant in the 1st Quarter during Fruitful or Semi-fruitful signs.
(Grains, asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, celery, corn, basil…)

For plants that seed inside the plant, plant in the 2nd Quarter during Fruitful or Semi-fruitful signs.
(Beans, eggplant, melons, peas, peppers, pumpkin, squash, tomatoes…)

For plants that fruit underground, plant in the 3rd Quarter during Fruitful or Semi-fruitful signs.
(Beets, carrots, potatoes, radishes, rutabagas, onions, garlic, turnips, other tubers…)

Transplant above ground crops during the 1st and 2nd Quarters and in fruitful or semi-fruitful signs.

Transplant below ground crops during the 3rd and 4th Quarters and in fruitful or semi-fruitful signs.

Fruitful Signs (Numbers are IN ORDER OF EFFECTIVENESS)
Cancer (1)
Scorpio (2)
Pisces (3)

Semi-Fruitful Signs
Taurus (4)
Libra (6)
Capricorn (5)

Barren Signs (Numbers are IN ORDER OF EFFECTIVENESS)
Aries (6)
Gemini (2)
Leo (1)
Virgo (3)
Sagittarius (5)
Aquarius (4)

All the fruitful or semi-fruitful signs are feminine except Libra. All barren signs are masculine except Virgo. Both are logical since the male is the father but the female is the producer. Logic says that Virgo should be fruitful or at least semi-fruitful, but the sign is the Virgin… untried, non-producer. Libra’s symbol is the Scales, the Balance… and thus neither masculine nor feminine.

Light of the Moon (Waxing Moon) is the period when the moon is growing in light, from the New Moon to the Full Moon. (First and Second Quarters.) The moon is ‘energized’ during this 14 day period and favorable to above ground crops in the right sign.

Dark of the Moon (Waning Moon) is the period when the moon is declining in light, from the full moon to the next New Moon, 14 days (Third and Fourth Quarters). Favorable for below ground crops in the right sign.

Canning, Drying or Freezing Food

Can food during a Waning Moon in a Fruitful sign.

Dry food in a Waning Moon in a Barren sign.

Can jams and jellies in a Waning Moon in Scorpio, Taurus or even Aquarius but not in Cancer or Pisces even though they are fruitful signs.

Pickle in the 3rd or 4th Quarter. For firm pickles, select Scorpio or Taurus in those quarters.

Bake in a fruitful sign during the 1st or 2nd Quarter Waxing Moon. Bake fancy cookies (like for judging or a big display) during Libra in a Waxing Moon.

Wow! Thanks.
I was just going to do an internet search to look this up. Trying to decide when to start some difficult seeds. Much appreciated.

Thanks everyone! When I have time, I want to edit it and add things like fishing, setting fence poles... maybe even haircuts, surgery and dental work. I'll be sure and post an update notice since edited posts do not show up on a watched thread list.

No No No don't post anything about dental work, it makes my teeth hurt ^_^

Hello, Darius!

I have a question. To plant, means to put a plant into the soil. Do these dates also apply to seed starting - as planting?

Thank you,

Evelyn

Evelyn, I haven't really figured that out... I have to go back and study the references to starting seeds. Off hand though, I'd say they do apply.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Since January and April are included, I'd say that's the time to start plants indoors. But, I'm a novice so...

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Yep, even outdoor planting includes planting seeds as well as plants...

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

So, That would be Nov. and January for winter sowing and April (?) for spring sowing? What would you start in June?

I'm a Capricorn, my DH is a Scorpio, my DSD and brother are Taurus', my best friend is a Cancer and my parents are Sagittarius' so I know vaguely what those months are, but could someone post a list of dates?

Also, it seems to me that planting by the moon would make more sense using the Chinese moon months then the sun signs. Does anyone know if there is an Asian form of this or one that uses the first moon etc...

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

It's not a matter of the months... it's about the 2-1/2 days or so of each month that the moon appears to pass through those constellations.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Ok, I can see that. So it is still moon based not sun based.

Yes.

Darius - Thank you! I was hoping for some deep information to get me started and you stepped right up!

peace.

If you want to REALLY take the guess work out of this "only way to go" method, go to www.gardeningbythemoon.com and order one of their calenders specifically for your growing season (short, medium or long). Cost is $14.95 plus s/h, is WELL WORTH the expense! Each month shows which dates are fruitful for startings seeds, transplanting, etc., which aren't. Been using one for 5 years now, have yet to have failures of any significience. Wouldn't recommend the calender if I wasn't a firm believer in it, and site has some great information also.

I have one on the wall, and I love it.

I love the Gardening by the Moon Calendar also. The producer of the calendar is really nice also. I ordered the download version for the year and had the calendars on my external hard drive which crashed in Oct. I use the calendar faithfully and was devastated, but when I contacted her, she gave me access to the three months which I lost.
