Bilbergia surprise

I received this Bilbergia pyramidalis in swap a couple of years ago. It put out a few pups but hadn't flowered for me. I cut off a huge pup nearly the size of the mother plant a few weeks ago, put the plant outside and ignored it. Look what it did in return:

Hey garden pom, nice blooms. Yours appear much redder than ours here in Aussie. I wonder if its breeding or cultivation?

Could just be the time of day the pic was taken (late afternoon). Most pics I have seen really look similar to mine. They are beautiful blooms, though, I am starting to see several of mine coming into bloom.
