Earthworms & mealworms for Koi & Goldfish

Merchantville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Is it wise to give Koi and/or Goldfish an occasional treat of nightcrawlers, earthworms, or mealworms in addition to their regular diet of wheat germ pellets etc.? Seems to me such natural live foods would do no harm and may actually be of some benefit.

Jim, I have had fish ponds for 28 years and every time I am digging in the garden and come across a worm I throw it to my fish. I have a big bug light out there and when I clean it out I put all the bugs on top of the water and they all go crazy for them. As far as feeding them I buy cheap fish food at the elevator. I only feed mine from the 1st of April till the Last of Oct. Hope this helps. BEV I am in central Illinois

Jim, I would not give them too many. How many fish do you have and are they big or small? When I emty my buglight if it is full I only put half on the water and the other a couple days after. Fish are gluttens just like in an aquarium you can over feed them. Sometimes mine go two or three days and they are fine. They eat mosquitoes too. BEV

Wow what a great link snapple! I got lots of ideas from it that I've never heard of. I can't imagine feeding a worm to my fish, I like what they do to my crappy clay soil too much, lol!

That is a good link, Snapple! I have some grapefruit sitting here waiting to be eaten...

I do the peas and cheerios all the time, they suck them down like crazy. We don't have the freezes here, but I DO stop feeding the koi when the water gets cold for about 2 months, then feed them only cheerios until it warms up again, and then go back to normal food. I use them as treats (along with the peas) all the time. I was told the peas add a little vitamin C to their diet, which helps their immune system.
Occassionally I do earth worms, but was warned to not feed them to the fish if you use any pesticides in your lawn.
