Okay...I'm a lily dummy

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

I admit it. What IS this? I bought a pack of lilium tigrinum from B&D Lilies at the F&G show. There were 3 bulbs in the bag. Potted them up and they have been growing really well (all the bulbs I got from them are going really well...all have buds just waiting for enough warmth to open). At any rate, I was looking at the plants today and noticed these. This one plant is the only lily out of all that I got from B&D that has these "berries."

The other two tigers that were in the bag have fuzzy white hair on the stalk. Is this normal?

So I've been looking for photos and did find one that shows the berry thingys, but what the heck ARE they and why don't the other two plants have them?

I think those are bulblets, but I'm not sure. I think I read somewhere that they will sometimes grow bulblets on the stalks. Don't know about the white fuzzy stuff.

Hey all, I hope I'm back up running again, we will see LOL.

Everyone's lilies look so happy and healthy! Yes, I think those are bulblets, actually called 'bulbils', sheri. Shows you have a true tiger lily. It's one way the lily reproduces. The bulbils will mature and fall off, thus planting themselves. And the white fuzzy stuff if normal on some lilies, too. Some of mine have that.

Did B and D warn you about lily virus? If not, they should have. Tiger lilies carry lily virus and most of the stock sold in the U.S. has it. It's no problem if you keep the tiger lilies planted away from your other lilies and make sure you if you use your gardening tools to cut flowers from them you dip the tools in bleach solution or alcohol. Tiger lilies are so beautiful they are completely worth growing, virus or not. They generally do not show symptoms so you won't know if the ones you have are 'carriers' or not. It's the hybrids that will succumb to lily virus. I think B and D has something about it on their website.

Here's a lily that opened today. It's supposed to be 'Corrida', but I thought that one had a little pink in it.

Hi Tills ~ Not intruding at all. Glad to have you up and running again.

MGH and Pixy ~ Thanks for the info. MGH, after you headed me off in the right direction, I found this on the web: http://www.mikesbackyardgarden.org/lilyprop.html
Gave me lots of good info about my "bulbils."

And Pix ~ No, they didn't say anything about lily virus. What does it do? All the stuff I got from them is in pots because I didn't know where to put them this year. But now I know, maybe the tigers will stay caged!

Here's my first lily of the year, though not a B&D. It's asiatic NOID in a bag of 15 bulbs from Home Depot. But who cares! It bloomed and it's pretty! ^_^

Thanks, outta!.....now I know the difference between bulbils and bulblets. ^_^

Oh, and your NOID is gorgeous!

Here's a link to B and D's info about the lily virus.

http://www.lilybulb.com/virus.html

just google 'lily virus' and you'll find lots of info. 'Mike's Backyard' has some info, too.

Thanks Pix. . .I'm on my way there right now.

Okay, back already. Man...that would have been nice to know before I bought them. But I suppose if they tell you about it, they'll never sell another Tiger Lily again. Now I don't know what to do with it. Also, can't seem to find anywhere, even after googling extensively ~ will the virus transfer only to other bulb plants or to all plants?

Just your lilies. Just don't plant them next to other lilies and you should be fine.
