Good grief!!
I've got Hoyas taking over every room in the house. They're climbing up walls, curtains, each other...I'm afraid to take a nap!!
Mine are all in hanging baskets, for their own safety, so I really can't pin them to little trellises.
So, do you all let em go wild, or train them?
To control, or not to control
When they hang...I try to wind them around themselves......
Almost all of mine are hanging and I do the same as AlohaHoya ... just train them to wind around themselves. I have a couple I need to do that with as they have "tentacles" sticking way out and reaching for other plants! I sure don't want two or three or more all tangled together! I never did like braiding and un-braiding. ^_^
Hoyas are very stubborn aren't they? They seem to love my summers too. Every day I have to coax them back to where they belong. I swear, if I stared at one long enough I'd see it grow. Have you ever noticed that if you hold your hand near a new vine it will quiver?
NO!!! I have to check that out!!! Are they terrified?
Uh oh ... maybe they are afraid one of the hoya hunters wants to take cuttings?? ^_^
I don't think so, I believe they're checking us out as possible climbing material. I recently put a very vigorous viner near where DH naps...
I like for them to hang down, but when new growth starts shooting out like tentacles on an octopus, I either use clips or twist ties to secure the vines to something. When they're brought inside for the winter and suspended from the ceiling, I hate getting unruly vines caught in my hair. That's when I really truss them up ... poor things.
This H. calycina is going to give me trouble, I just know it.
I unwound him from all of the neighbouring pots last night and woke up this am to find he had grown another 4 inches and was wound around another plant again. I've never seen a Hoya grow so fast...
A few months ago I ran out of those teensy little butterfly clips so resorted to some of my large hair clips, they hold quite a few of those rampant vines! I need to put hair clips on my shopping list! Seems I go looking for one to tie my hair up and can't find nary a one ... wonder why?
You mean those claw things??
I've got some of those, I bought them for my hair, but its too fine for them to stay put...I'm gonna go give them a try!!
Yep ... those claw things ... I've always called them butterfly clips. I have very fine hair too and some of the larger clips will not hold my hair either. They come in a couple of different sizes ... you can even find small ones for kids hair.
I've never seen those teeny butterfly plant clips for sale anywhere so I don't know if it would be cheaper to buy those.
I picked up 6 of them at the dollar store...6 for a buck. The hair things.
Yep ... Gotta love the $ Store! One of my favorites, along with Big Lots!
I know there are lots of places selling those clips...just Google it.
Lowe's here carry the Butterfly clips in a small pkg, don't remember how many are in there either one or two dz I think.
I've also seen them in garden centers that sell Orchid supplies.
I also sometimes buy the small hair clips and they work great and don't clamp as tight as the small dragonfly clips do sometimes.
They seem to work better for the larger vines that have fatter stems and work well for clamping several stems together..
