CLOSED: Lantana "Banana Split"

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Variegated w/ bright cherry colored flowers. Not winter hardy in my zone 8 but can be brought in for winter in frost free area. I've over-wintered them for 2 yrs in un-heated lean-to and even left one out in un-heated free standing greenhouse and it came back.Well rooted 4" pots. See my "want" list or tempt me.

Which color are the flowers? Is this a tall lantana or a small mounding one?

Thanks

bigred, do you have any tips for rooting Lantana? I have a number of ones I'd like to save overwinter, but am not going to have room for large pots for all of them. Last winter I did dig up one and put it in a big pot and started a few extras from it by pinning them to the soil and letting them root there overwinter. I've never tried cuttings.

that's the what I normally do it but you might try heal cuttings.

i've not been too successful rooting lantana, maybe 25%. However, literature says they're easy to root.

I have found them very easy to root. They are just like weeds here but I think they are very pretty and the butterflies just love them.

Thanks. I really enjoy them too.

Generally I grow them from seed but Banana Split hasn't produced any seeds.

Big red how about ginger for the the lantana. I have both white butterfy and pincone gingers as well as varagated shell ginger. I also have redb trees seedlings and dogwood seedlings cornus florida. Both are about 4 to 6 inches tall. I like to save my gingers for special trades like this one. Please look over my list and ask I may have enough growth to get a trade of something else you may like. For those who are not experienced with var. lantana, here is a tip to maintain the beautiful variegation: cut off any all-green branches that come up. True, at times your plant might look awfully puny, but eventually it will fill up with variegated branches.

I don't know what causes them to revert, but I do know cutting off the green parts help. I have also done the cutting with other variegates and it has worked. Also, don't postpone this chore. I had a var. monstera that i didn't trim, and when I finally got around to it, it has reverted to 100% green.

I'm closing this post. It has gotten way too hot to be shipping anything safely.
