Figured I would do a thread just for the marans..
All are the same age, will be 12 weeks old on July 7th
I noticed while I was talking to them, that not only do I have one with a funny butt.. but one of them has yellow legs.. (Dottie)
The other 3 seem to all have the same body style, same feathering, same tail carraige.. same face.. Freckles is one of the 3 that is much larger & lighter than the others and is also the protector and puts all19 gals to bed at night. Bertha is missing her tail feathers, yet has a bump where the feathers should be, ie. tailbone.
Bertha, Dottie & Doodles all have the same black/white coloring
Bertha, Doodles & Freckles all have same light color faces combs & whitish legs
Dottie has a redish face, red comb, yellow legs
Berth, defect, no tail feathers.. never has, nothing seems to be growing in either
Marans
Fran I like Berth's Defects name :):):)
Ha, smartchick! You are!
Hi frans. With Dottie, they "warn" that people are crossing Marans with other barred birds and then selling them as the more valuable Marans. I wonder if Dottie could be crossed with Barred Plymouth Rock--they have yellow legs and large red combs and wattles. Or possibly she is a BPR (although she looks kinda of Maransie to me). If so, her eggs will be noticeably lighter. Marans are suppose to have white legs and feet although some of mine have had darker shading on them as chicks.
As for poor Bertha--haven't got a clue. Maybe she is just a slow developer?
lol Smartchick...
thats another song for tf to look up... bertha butt & the Butt sistas...LOL, from the early 70s I think...
oh, no!
i htink Bertha Butt is a Bert or Bud... look like my PBR roos rears before tail feather started coming out [or in]
tf
Isn't that odd...
I do wonder if you both aren't right about maybe a few of these marans being mixed with BPR.. I really didn't think about it.. but little nemo my BPR bantum has the same butt.. but his come is bright red and he is very roo-ee, bertha is not roo-ee at all.
So Cat, what is a Maransie? All except Dottie have the light legs.. she has the yellow.
lucky that first pic looks like one of my marans sitting next to a very small cornish X
Have yours laid any eggs yet?
i dont know they are mixed with already laying hens i am 99.9% percent sure they are because they were hatched in october last year and the silkies i hatched in november just started laying there first eggs(they are in my new silkie pen)
I love the red ones with the white tails... what are they...
I have to laugh.. whos an expert??? certianly you were not talking to me...LOL
I have to look at everyone else for help..

where did they come from? that is certainly cuckoo barring, i just don't know anything about this breed. wouldn't be on this thread ecept to pick on a few ol' hens early in the morn...
i dunno i got there mother from a friend just mixed chickens he said he needed new blood and there father i got from a guy on the side of the road who was selling them i bought all of them cause i thought the guy looked seedy and i didnt want harm to come to the chickens
oh, like if i dont' get some cash for these birds i'll have to eat them?
pretty much
thought maybve that was what "seedy" meant... poor guy needed some booze... glad you came along when you did, and now you get some babies to boot!
yep and i got a ton of chickens i went up to 80 but i sloded heaps and i am at 25 now all my favourites left and with the money i got from the chicken i fixed up there coop and extended it so every one wins
very good Lucky, glad you stayed awake it is nice chatting with ya
thanks its not that late it is 12:30 at night so i still got more in me
DH says he knew what seedy meant LOL
Here's a page that shows many different kinds of Marans. http://feathersite.com/Poultry///CGK/Marans/BRKMarans.html They're prized for their brown eggs.
edited to add that I think I just found what my fake 'Delaware's are!!! On this link check out the white Marans!!!

cool page mollyd
tamara i just realized u probably dont use that word much over there he was a con artist
josh
Oh we use the word "seedy" here luckycharm! But we don't use it as much for people, more like "It was a seedy hotel" or "that is a seedy neighborhood". I think we do say someone "seems seedy" though, like someone "seems shady". Just generally means questionable, rundown, or untrustworthy. tf just doesn't hang out with seedy types:0)
are you kidding? my first husband was a con, and this one has a "seedy" past LOL...
Molly, i will have to look at that later, so cool!
thanks fran, i saw a pullet today at a friends. she thought it was a barred rock and got it to breed to the roo [spoiled rotten] she bought from me. i immediately knew the body type and coloring was wrong, then it hit me, and i told her, you have a Marans! she is happy, and will know for certain when she gets her first egg!!!
tf
do any of u know how to sex day old chicks??
we have some threads that discuss that with several links involved. really depends on the breed...
tf
i know some are easy to tell by colouring i think i will look in to learning how to do it
There are some that are colored hybrid sex-links--males one color and pullets another--then there are pure bred ones that have some consistant differences--Cuckoo marans roos chicks are lighter than the pullets and their head spots are less well defined, and Barnevelder roo chicks have white breasts and the pullets have grey or tan ones. These areeasy. Then there are some breeds/strains that are feather-sexed--the other thread had a nice slide show on that.
The only way with the rest is vent sexing--which is really hard to learn (you are suppose to "sacrifice" the chicks to confirm your guess by looking at their internal sex-organs while you are learning). Next best and very unreliable is looking at the comb development--the roos are suppose to get bigger and redder sooner. Ask tf how well that works!
I think some people can just "tell". It is a gift, like being psychic. Actually I think they are picking up on very subtle clues that they aren't even consciously aware of. Maybe you'll be one of those, josh!
well thats the way i tell at the moment i can tell at about 4 weeks but i have been fooled
