What's the recipe for Humming bird feeders? I noticed I had a few around my yard so I got a Humming Bird feeder.

I make a 4 to 1 mixture

To make a little over a quart
Put 2 cups of water and 1 cup of sugar in a pan
Bring to a boil or heat until the liquid is clear.
Remove from heat and add 2 more cups of cold water.
Let cool to room temperature before filling feeders.

Keep any unused sugar/water in the refrigerator.

You can reduce the amounts to make a smaller amount just keep the 4 to 1 ratio of sugar to water.

Do not add food color.

Thanks, why not add food coloring?

The red color looks pretty to people but is not good for the hummers. They really aren't attracted to red anyway. I have several feeders with no red on them and they are as busy as the ones with red.

Betty, okay I'll do it that way.

One more tip that I was told was to stick to a cane sugar. Apparently if the hummers have a choice they avoid the beet sugars.

I use the 1 part sugar to 4 parts water also and actually lessen the sugar during the summer to about 3/4 cup. Please don't err on thinking more sugar will be better. I read it will rot the beaks if it is too sweet. Like to encourage them to go to the prefered flowers instead.

I Haven't heard that Pod, Makes sense. We sure don't the little things having to go to the "BeakDentist". LOL
I usually accidentally cut back a little on the sugar but only because of the size of the container that I mix in. I felt I was "Skimping" on the babies, glad I was accidentally doing the right thing.
