Hello missg, I hope someone comes along to answer...I have the same trouble with mines and have a canna that look exactly like your banana.
Kim
It looks like slug damage to me. Look for a slime trail or go out at night or very early in the morning and you will most likely catch them having a feast.
Fred
Yes I have been seeing slug under the flower pots each.
If that cause what can I do?
I'm going to check to night.

I have a big problem with snails so I have to use snail/slug bait to attempt to keep them under control. If you have pets around you have to be careful with the bait though.
Some people put copper wire around the base of their plants to repel them. You can trap them with a shallow dish with beer in it. Another good option is place a melon rind upside down near the plant. the slugs will be drawn to it and then you can just toss the rind and slugs away the next morning..
Here is a post on DG that has lots of other ideas.

Good luck!
Thanks TriFred,
Because, I have two days, I will trying the tape and beer.

Gale, your leaf damage looks like caterpillar damage to me. I have two brugs. that were set upon, hardly a leaf left undamaged. I turned all the leaves over and found around 15 caterpillars on one of the plants. On another, I did find a slug. For the slug, I tossed some snail and slug bait on the top of the soil but for the cats. I will continue to look for them. We are having one rain after another so spraying of any sort would not be very effective. The cats, btw, are exactly the same shade of green as the brug. leaves, so you have to look carefully for them. Good luck in getting those little munchers.

Hi All my fellow garden,This morning I find out that,
The Banana tree, I think is the last picture, was done
by a squirrel, them little buggers. The squirrels took a couple
of the top leaves, off the Banana tree and pulled a leaf of one of
the caladiums. I know it was the squirrels, I water my garden 5 AM,
things was ok. Looked out into the garden about 9 AM and the
damage was done. If it was children my dogs, would have start to bark.
What should I do?
Also last night around 11 PM I was in my garden and there was 2 or 3
slug moving across the gravel

I've got the holes in my brugs and the morning glories look like lace. Cannas have holes too. I know they are probably slugs, that's what everyone says. But how big are the little darlilngs. I never see them, even at night. I put out bait, etc. tried beer.
Could it be something else. What is weird to me is that sometimes I find the holes in neat little rows.
Do they ever go away and let the plants alone, or will we fight them as long as the plants are green?
I'm really not stupid, (well, not too much)just the first year I've really gardened and never paid attention to plant pests
Friday night the one I find in my garden was about 5'' long and about round as a dime,
I got them good with salt. I'm going to try the beer.
I keep looking for evidence and never see any. No slime, nothing. I do see things hopping around, leaf hoppers I guess. Will they eat holes or are slugs the only thing?
Today's Saturday, lol, I'll go hit my son of for beer. Sure he has some today!
What is weird to me is that sometimes I find the holes in neat little rows.
Lorraine, if you are referring to what you are finding on your Cannas, the insect Cornear Worm is the culprit. It eats down inside the tender new leaves before it unfolds, hence the neat, concise holes from the inside of the roll to the outside. When I see this pattern of holes, I spray into the inside of the leaf with Sevin, on all of my Cannas, and the problem is taken care of. Once the initial group of worms have been killed, I have not found them to return that year.

I have the sevin dust. Can I sprinkle that on them, or is it not strong enough. It's 5%. I hate bugs!!!!! INstead of enjoying them, spend most of our time trying to keep critters off them!!!
Give the dust a try, Lorraine. We mix up a spray and use it on all sorts of plants with insect issues. Wonder what it would be like to garden without bugs! :)
