A couple that dovetail in with the herbal, edibles and ornamentals categories that do far better in fall/winter (at least in this zone and south) are Nasturtiums and Calendula...

I don't "do" these, but aren't snapdragons a cool weather bloomer too?

I just throw the seeds in the beds where I want them and leave the rest to mother nature....then when the early summer flowers are giving it up, I have a fresh bevy of color!
