I was shopping at Top Foods the other day, when I realized that I could score some veggie starts to buoy up my poor growth of seedlings this year, so I picked up some tomato '4th of July', crookneck and zucchini squash, and one plant marked Squash 'Flying Saucer'. At a $1.25 each it was a no brainer, Flying Saucer had to come home.
The plant is in Plantfiles, with some nice pictures. Has anyone here grown it?
Squash 'Flying Saucer'?
Analog, that is the best squash, I just love it. I have had trouble finding seeds. The real name was Summer squash Scallopes, back in the days. Enjoy Best cooked, steam till tender and, season to taste with butter, MMMMMM.
Cool. Thanks for the input. At least someone around here knows about it.

Seriously an Alien in street clothes.
Rob - I grow it every year - real good, even when tiny.
I have a yellow variety this year, but have grown the little green f. saucers, too.
If you steam them, slice in half & cook for 2 minutes, unless you like them soft. I like to saute quickly in olive oil with garlic, and top off with feat cheese & a sprinkling of Nutmeg.
I am certain that you will enjoy them however you fix them.
Cool. Now I really feel like folks are coming out of the wood work in their love of Flying Saucers.

Going off to visit with the Lone Gunmen.
Uh, what kind of veggies do they have?
I believe what I planted was called white bush scalloped squash; it was plentiful in GA, but I havent found it in TN in 3 yrs now. I was so proud because no one knew what it was or had seen it before. They also call it pitty pat squash too, don't they?
I picked one from the garden yesterday ... 4 more should be ready tomorrow or Friday.
I wonder about planting a 2nd crop. or freezing it. that's if I don't eat it all. ^_^
Up here it's patty pan, but I had heard of pitty pat too. The nicknames fit well!
If you freeze it, the texture will change dramatically.
The Lone Gunmen don't have any veggies. No time, conspiracies to unravel, abductions to witness, secret discussions with Mulder and such.
Its Mug Root Beer and pizza, hold the anchovies.
Movie time Ha Ha
I grew two scallop squash plants this year. One was in an earthbox, and it just broke off at the base - so now it's just one.
The one is perhaps not in the ideal location, since it gets no morning sun - but it seems to be coming along nicely nevertheless.
One of my favorite squashes is Cocozelle. I have a lot of problem with disease with my squash plants, but Cocozelle seems to be resistant and produces nicely!
If anyone gets any seeds off them. Please send, so love them.
Only Squash I really like. And hard to find.

Hi Tillysrat,
I have plenty of extra Scallop Squash - I made a mistake and bought a much bigger package than I meant to. I ended up sending out most of them in the seed trading forum, but some people that claimed them ended up not sending envelopes - so I still have leftovers.
I will put a package in the mail for you!
Thank You, Thank You Sooooo Much
^_^

My pleasure. They'll be in the mail today. Glad to find a good home for them!
Such a joy, glad to get them. So Thank You.

Boel, got them today, sooooo thank you. Q is it to late to plant them now? Or save them, hate to waste them, This weather as been so funked this year. I don't have a clue on how long good weather will last here. I am drooling to have them steam and smother in butter, with a pinch of garlic, Salt, Pepper and I know something is missing can't but finger on it at the moment, LOL
So thank you
Tills
^_^
Plant now Tils - your crop will be at the end of the season.
Thanks for the answer Katye! I would also think it's worth a try starting them now. Summer squash starts producing pretty quickly.
There is more than enough seed for you to give it a shot this year and have it again for next year.
Keep us posted!
Thanks a bunch, going to try, will let you know how it goes.
^_^
