Is having an Organic Farm Tour on August 17th: http://www.stov.us/at/langleyFarms.html. I have found that several of the unique plants (tweedia, for instance) have come from Langley. I'd love to see what all they're doing out there. This looks like a one-of-a-kind place. The site says that they have planted rare annuals and unusual shrubs on the property.
Unfortunately, I will be in Oregon that weekend for my dad's 90th birthday celebration, so I can't go. I'll have to see if there's not another time that I can get out there.
Looks like they might sell plants on Sundays at the West Seattle Farmer's Market through July 6th. Neo - they have classes on seed collecting and storage of heirlooms. I, for one, want to plan on going to their plant sale next year in April!!
Langley Fine Farms on Vashon Island
Amazing how I hardly know what's going on a few miles from my home. I've never been to the Langley's farm, though I have seen them at the Farmer's Market while running my own booth (not all summer, just a couple of times). Sadly, I'm going to be away also at that time in August. It would be too bad if the one time a contingent from DG comes to Vashon I am out of town! If anyone does decide to go on their tour, you could also check out the Applegate Farm quite nearby where they sell field grown Rhodies and Japanese Maple. The fellow there took my family on an hour long impromptu tour of his berry patches, orchard, and grape arbors when we were passing by and knocked on the door to see if they were open. He was quite a character and full of information about good varieties for our region.
I wonder if we could contact Langley and ask for a tour for DG members on a weekend when you were around, Holly? Anybody else interested? We could combine it with a tour of Applegate Farm.
It looks like they will be selling plants (no produce) at the West Seattle Farmers' Market on Sunday morning - this is their last one. I might have to go down and see what they have. The last several little splurge plants (oh, this is pretty) I've bought have been from Langley, so they have me quite interested.
If there is interest, I'll check into the possibilities. I could ask Colvos Creek also. They have a display garden that I have never seen that is not far off the main highway. The other 2 farms are in Dockton, which is on Maury Island where I live (connected to Vashon by land bridge). Then you could all stop at my house to eat berries.
I'll be with you in spirit, as always.
