I have filled two hummingbird feeders and had only one hummingbird to visit my feeders. I don't know what happen to them. We have changed up our patio part of it is covered and the other part we had to put up some umberellas to shade the other part to keep it from being so hot.
What happen to my Hummingbirds?
I don't think your lack of hummers has anything to do with moving/changing your patio around. We have a few but not as many as we usually do. Same thing with butterflies.
I've kept up with 2 hummer feeders since April & not one visitor! Hardly any
flutterbies, either.
Two or three weeks ago, I opened a new bag of sugar and shortly after that, the hummers seemed to arrive. Before this, I would see just a few around blooms, never at feeders. We were all grumbling about no hummers. An older customer of ours came up with something that you might check. He said they won't come to any food that isn't made with cane sugar. I now wonder if the last bag I used was a beet sugar. The one I am now using is Imperial Pure Cane sugar.
To prove or disprove his theory, you might want to check your sugar bag and see what type it is. After reading sugar bags, I find the only ones that specify type is cane sugar. The beet sugar does not tell where it is derived from...
I haven't seen nearly as many hummers or butterflies this year either. Last year I had to refill both of my hummer feeders at least once every day but this year they are lasting for 3 to 4 days before needing a refill. I have had spectacular blooms in my butterfly garden but just no where close to the number of butterfly visits I had last year. I guess reproductively speaking, they haven't had a very good year :-(
I'm not sure if you have had feeders up earlier or not. I usually have a lot of hummers (maybe 6 to 12 at the same time) at the feeders in the spring, before many of the wildflowers or my garden is in bloom. But, for me, typically this time of year, the amount of them drops to just a couple a day at the feeders as they have a lot available to drink from flowers.
I've had 2 feeders up since April. Things were late blooming here because of a
cool, wet spring. But even with the feeders & things in full bloom now, not one
hummer! And a lot less flutterbies, too.
We've had the opposite, a very hot, dry spring and summer. In fact, my rain lilies, late-summer bloomers have already bloomed. They decided that May and June must have been the long, hot summer. I don't have a hummer in sight. I'm getting more butterflies now, but I haven't seen any hummingbird moths and I usually have lots of those. I checked into this thread because I was wondering the same thing!
Well, my hummer just got my attention at the patio door. She was peering in at me. This is the first time I have seen her all year, since she left last Oct. I stuck the feeder back out, but she is content with my Aloe flowers, and cypress vines, right now.
I'm glad she finally came back. I was expecting her back in Feb., like last year.
Don't give up, everybody. : )
My hummer only likes flowers. He wont touch a feeder.
I only garden for him now. He has my full attention lol !
Plant some native sage or any native bell shaped flower.
I'm addicted to my hummer.
A.
