July Moon Dates

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

Help me, help me... still plantin' stuff... need July Moon dates! Darius! Bridgidlily! Where are you folks?

OK, I know I can find it other places on the web, but it's handy to have it here, 'cuz I check this forum first, lol!

Columbus, OH(Zone 5b)

I always to to this site to get my planting dates
http://www.amagickgarden.com/pages/amgpages/amgcalendar.html
July isn't up yet.

We have a day or two more until the new moon so it's not yet the right time to plant above ground crops. Soon.

Dove

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

Oh thank you Dove! I knew it was planting time soon, didn't want to miss the first day, lol.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Sorry to be late!!! You'll forgive me though -- it's all the fault of my BRAND NEW GRANDDAUGHTER!!! Audrey was born 7 weeks early and weighed in at 4 lbs. 14 oz. She's beautiful (of course!) and very healthy. As soon as she has the sucking thing down to an art, she'll join her siblings at home. Very happy.

ANYWAY...

Plant on July: 2, 3, 6 - 12, 21, 22, 25.

Harvest, etc. July: 1, 18, 19, 20, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29.

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

Oooh a Cancerian baby girl... she's a keeper then, lol! Congrats on the new granddaughter, and you are completely forgiven!

Thanks for the dates!! I better get busy!

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, she's a keeper -- I don't know how we'll deal with her once she starts to walk sideways, but we'll cope. (Her mother and I are both Libra.)

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

LOL, well from a sideways walker, just be patient with her and stand back!! You and your daughter will surely keep her little life well balanced, hehe!

Columbus, OH(Zone 5b)

Ohhh Brig and new little granddaughter, who absolutely marvelous! I love the name Audrey and how fitting for the tiny darling "noble strength"

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

dovey, it never even occurred to me to look up the meaning of the name - and how appropriate for her. She's remarkably strong for a preemie (though this doctor may say that to all the grandmas...) and you just get a feeling, looking at her, that she WILL hold her own.

Sundownr, as long as she can sidestep her Taurean sister (who does like to be in CHARGE mode!) I think she'll be just fine. The Virgo brother between the two of them may have the hardest time!

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

I believe Taurus and Virgo are both very compatible with Cancer! So, they are all in for a close and loving future together!! If anything, you may end up with a "little princess" on your hands if the older siblings spoil her, LOL.

Suits me right down to the ground! :)

If anyone hasn't seen this... I posted most of the moon sign basics here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/873292/

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I've printed that out, darius; that was great. I may embroider it into a sampler! When? Oh, yeah, when there's nothing to do in the garden...

Columbus, OH(Zone 5b)

Darius,
That's for the list, I printed it out too.. very helpful

I may embroider it into a sampler!

What a fabulous idea, I would love to do that, but I honestly don't have a clue where to start

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Well honestly, I did it for myself but then it was easy to copy and post. I'm determined to do better at planting by the signs! My tomatoes this year were planted correctly and are going gangbusters. Did the same with broccoli, beans, savoy cabbage and kohlrabi but missed it on the lentils... and the lentils are still tiny stubs. Sigh.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

dovey, if I ever get around to it, as soon as I figure it out I'll let you know!

darius, my tomatoes were INCREDIBLE this year. Correct moon, and correct companions. The fewest I harvested in a day was 7, the most 23 -- every day for a few weeks! Unfortunately too hot now, but I've cut them back and hope for a fall crop. I even cut them back at the proper moon time, so they may have a chance.

Cool! Let us know about the fall crop... :)

Hi all -

I am interested in and knowledgeable about sun signs and how they affect people, but planting by the moon is new to me. This is very interesting and I'm still fact-gathering.

Brigidlily - what are your tomato companions?

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

welcome, katie59! We're all sniffing our way through the info, too, but I for one am convinced!

My tomato companions were carrots, marigolds, sweet basil, and bee balm. If you're interested, "Carrots Love Tomatoes" by Louise Riotte is where I got my information and it is GREAT. She also wrote "Roses Love Garlic" and it is more herbs and flowers, where the first is more vegetables.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Thank you, brigidlily. I will look for those - are they books or DG articles or . . . I love the idea of interplanting and am putting rosemary, lavendar and chives in with my roses.

I made my elderly father a whiskey-barrel garden in the last couple of years with tomatoes around the outside and beans growing up thei middle. Neither of us thought about the fact that the extra nitrogen in the tomato food would make the beans just get leafy and produce no beans. It was pretty, but no blossoms or beans. So I guess I just need to pay more specific attention . . .

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

That's the kind of info these books are full of. I got mine on amazon.com.

Harvest, etc. July: 1, 18, 19, 20, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29
Question...It is best if I do not harvest between the 2 till the 17 ... what about my Zucchini ?
This system brings more question to me.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

rentman, my gut instinct is that 'harvest' dates are intended for crops we wish to store for a long time ... potatoes, apples, winter squash, wheat...

Frankfort, KY(Zone 6a)

darius, that clears it up a little, Thanks for all your info.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I suspect it's better to harvest on a planting date than wait and the fruit is either overripe or rotten! I harvest as they ripen -- I'll wait and harvest the potatoes (if I get any) when the moon is on the wane.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

You know, it occurred to me this morning that "harvest" is really not the right word to use. The waxing moon is for building, creating, growing. The waning moon is for the destruction that has to come for the creating to take place -- it's compost that makes the seeds grow and all that. The waning moon is more a time for pruning and weeding and mowing, not so much harvesting.

To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under Heaven. I'm picking that cantaloupe when it thumps right, no matter what phase the moon is in!
