begonia petisitifolia

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

Hi, does anyone have any experience growing this thick-stemmed begonia? I bought one recently and have it growing nicely under a cloche (1 gal jar) as it's too rainy down here right now to leave exposed. it's getting some nice dappled a.m. light and seems happy. i'm curious about propagation, what growing conditions are best, etc.

thanks for any info.

From what I read and my limited experience, temperature is one of the critical factors. This group gets large and I wouldn't be afraid to take it out of the jar as rain water does not hurt them. They are not suited to jar culture unless you have a tiny seedling or juvenile plant. Propagate from stem, leaf and seeds. Most are said to require a lot of sunlight but I keep mine in high shade. Insufficient light gives leggy weak plants. They get large and need deep wide pots and may require staking. My reference is growing a few and “Begonias, The Complete Reference Guide” by Thompson.
