This is a female fiscal shrike, brown marking...hopefully I can get a nice pic when they nest again

I think this is the cape white-eye (small, fast-moving bird). I cannot see enough to say its the orange-river white-eye, that looks the same, but for orange tinge on the flanks

Wattled starling - non-breeding (male)...they are here to feed on the fruits of the buffalo-thorn tree.

Another pic in the tree...once the fruit is gone, they are too!

Hadeda Ibis...awfull sound, they breed here and wake us up in the morning. They call to each other and once that starts, it takes a while to quiet down!

Like the Fiscal Shrike, smart bird. Looking in my shrikes book (Lefranc & Worfolk, A Guide to the Shrikes of the World), the narrow white eyebrow suggests it is intermediate between collaris (southern & eastern South Africa; all-black head) and subcoronatus (northwestern South Africa, Namibia, Botswana; broad white eyebrow). On their map, Bloemfontein looks to be about on the dividing line of the two subspecies.

Great birds, Little_things. The Cape White-eye looks very similar to out Silver-eye, Zosterops something-or-the-other. Resin?

Yep, same genus.

resin - I think it's subcoronatus, but there is also aridicolus (might be further north however) with the same white brow.
They are, I agree totally, very interesting birds.

Thanks!

Do you see many Lesser Grey Shrikes as well? Had one of these this spring, in Britain it is a rare vagrant from its southeast European breeding area, but it migrates to South Africa for the (northern hemisphere) winter, should be down your way November to March.
