OK dimmer..now you need to let me know how those roots do once you put the leaf in your potting mix..I never have any luck that way..I get roots when I do that in water..same with av's.... but... once I put them in potting mix everything goes south..lol..keep us posted on how yours does! I am curious..maybe I do something wrong..more than likely thats the case with me..lol..

all I am guessing is that you better plan on doming it real good once you get it in a mix.............and I would cut the top half off so it can be encouraged to grow more roots and less leaf.

Kim: I agree with Gail. Since you rooted the leaf in water, it has the thin watery roots and when it gets transplanted into soil, it will definitely need a lot of humidity for awhile until those roots take hold and get stronger! Years ago I rooted a lot of AV leaves in water and if I didn't dome them I had a heck of a time getting them to survive once I put them in soil. I still have the same problem with houseplants I root in water. Once they are rooted and I plant them in soil, if I don't put them in a plastic bag or under some sort of dome they don't seem to do well.

On another thought,, I would use a whole lot perlite in whatever you plant them in.............

Thanks Ladies I will do something maybe over the Holiday

Question ..............I use a leaf not cut as some advise in a potting medium. They just seem to sit and sit there for months before a plantlet appears. Is there an average time it takes you to get emergence of the new plantlet? I usually put two leaves in a foam coffee cup with drainage holes and sit them in proven violet light zones in my house. I bottom water. Without a baggie tent I get about sixty to seventy five percent but it takes a long time. Comments????

I only use about 3" of a leaf and stick them in a mix of 1/3 perlite, 1/3 soil less mix and 1/3 vermiculite. I barely moisten the mix and then dome them and put them on a heating mat or something for about 5 days. Because the little amount of heat causes so much condensation I take the dome off once a day for about 15 minutes. It usually takes about 2 weeks to 3 weeks for the leaves to have roots. Then I take the dome off of them and just let them stay in an open tray under the gro lights. Babies will appear usually about 2 months later.........

Good luck and I am sure if you read the stickys at the top of the AV forum you can find many ways to stick strep leaves. Since you are in zone 5a and I am in the heat belt down in zone 9a, I am sure yours could benefit greatly from bottom heat for 4 or 5 days so the leaves can hurry and get roots before they rot.

Gee thanks......Never thought about bottom heat in my house. My last cuttings were in a dome and do look better. Guess I should rig up some lights. I am presently using the natural Eastern windows lighting where our violets grow nicely.

Remember everyone does things differently and get the same results........hope you meet success!

Oh my............I've been playing at this probigation and inside seed growing for more than fifty years. I'm always interested in what and how others are doing. The only thing I have not rooted is a broom handle. All the rest were normally 50% take or better. AV's are a relatively new entry in my book of experiences. Always tweeking and experimenting.

Isn't that the truth! I have been into the gessies for about 11/2 years and am constantly looking for new and better ways to propagate leaves and cuttings.

I have a lot of East facing floor to ceiling glass and more South windows. The room is 18 X 36.
It is a combination use room but our plants love the natural lighting. We will be building and extending our plant shelving as we move into fall and winter. We really just started to expand our one or two plants of a type into small collections. Now we have more and want to bring more in for our winter enjoyment. I need stuff to tinker with to keep me active. I have come to dislike the TV as a time filler.....until football appears. :)
