Time and time again I see friends making friends. When the comfort zone is evident trust leads to careless discussion of absence from our homes. Your travels and consequently absence from your homes should be limited to E mail and then only with known friends.
Please prompt yourselves to stop short of showing your absences from your homes. Please do not make yourselves an easy hit by anyone that would know it takes twenty minutes to go for groceries and just five to lift your brand new hundred buck foundation planting.
I made a mistake not long ago showing my grandson in a photo. Please think of the consequences of publishing your locations, names and valued treasures without knowing there is proven risk everywhere. Your forum photos without specific location data are safe in my opinion.
SECURITY ALERT
Good advice, Dwaine. I am often reminding about these things as well - including posting photos of kids or showing your address, etc

Thanks for the post, I've been sharing and not thinking. You're right, I will be more careful.
Good post Doc! ☺
Hey we just do not think. Most of us that is. Someone just told me it's OK someone will be in the house while we are gone. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm....drumming up business for the house sitter? Worse to find a dead house sitter upon return. I just changed my location data on this site as a bit of a mis-lead yet still good enough for a general idea. One of you tipped me off to this possible care management.
I did that a while ago. I always recommend people don't list their city/town.
Right! Even Batman doesn't tell where the Bat Cave is!! ☺
Thanks Doc & Victor, I did the same.
Can someone write directions on where to go to change displayed information?
Hi Yankee Cat. Go to my tools, preferences, your location. Then type over the city. If you need more help just reply or dmail I'll be here a while.
Donna
Thanks Doc. just tweaked mine a bit.
Thanks - I found it.
Might change mine to Milky Way.
Thank you! I have updated mine, as well. - Lynn
How many of you are in the address exchange?
Another bad idea.
I'm in the addy exchange, but it is a PO box, so good luck to anyone that way.
I refuse to be super paranoid regarding my whereabouts. Makes me feel like the nasty people of the world have won.
I am not paranoid. These are simple, common sense things to do in today's world. It's the same as not leaving your banking and credit card numbers accessible, etc. And even an occasional check of the news shows how often people are targeted, ripped off, hurt, etc., because of the web.
True Victor, but it is a small percentage when compared to the total population.
Anyways, everyone seems to assume I live in Georgia...LOL
Smaller, of course. But approx 7500 subscribers have constant, 24/7 access to everything you post. That's not including everyone else who has access to those subscribers' computers.
Question on the addy exchange. Does everyone who is listed in it have access to your address, or do you control who has access to it? Also, is it open to subscribers only or all members?
You only have access to it if your addy is in there too. Subscribers only.
So everyone in it can see everyone else's address?
I am not too paranoid either. Anyone wants to come get me or my husband come on over. Chances are you will have to deal with my husband and dog. Also anyone that is visiting. Example - got home from the RU yesterday and there was 4 guys down by the swamp having a bonfire. That don't even include other things......
Last but not least - there is nothing on the property or the in house anyone would want .
Who's more threatening, hubby or doggy??
I live on a county road with access to several major state roads. We have had neighbors' homes broken into and the thieves long gone before the police arrive. In some cases, they aren't after jewels or cash, but laptops or other electronic equipment. Sometimes kids find out you aren't going to be around and decide to have a party at your expense. They can also get into your mail and take things that you'd never miss until much later, too. I hear people in the post office and supermarket talking about the trips they are taking, and also the comings and goings of their neighbors. It may not be the person in line behind you, but them casually mentioning what they overheard and that's what starts it. We are alert to cars pulled over on the side of the road with people "talking" on their cell phones. You don't always know.
I've already had my credit card and personal information breached by supposedly secure places, including a job I had 25 years ago and the local hospital. This really ticked me off because I'm very careful about shredding sensitive documents and never giving out my SS# or financial info. The best thing? They decided to have you sign up for a watch on your accounts but in order to do that, you had to fill out a form, include your SS#, sign it, and the return it in the non-security envelope they provided! DUH!
Loose lips can do more damage than you might think.
I appreciate the concern but I'll leave the South China. If you can find IT and MY house your doing good. But then you need to contend with 4 dogs...the smallest weighs 50lbs also DH & DS both are a deadly shot with a gun or a bow.
I can bet the crook just spent loads of money on gas getting way out here. I haven't got anything worth taken the comes close to the gas money wasted. LOL
I am a thief's WORST nightmare and very proud of it!
Oh...and I can swing one mean axe.
Do you use it for deadheading the DL's?? Your biggest concern is a garden thief!

Nope, I actually chop wood. Yes my DL are a different story...but I really don't have any of the newest ones. Too pricey for my taste, im patient and wait till the price drops. So the DL crook would be disappointed, not to mention I have no READABLE name tags! Ha ha ha
My buddy who really thinks I in some magic way am his dad is my wacker.....I could never say a word but he is my worst. I try to do the sensitive areas ahead of him. He must be related to my two car guys....rustem and bustum.
Very good thread, Doc. My hubby is a retired State Trooper. I tend to be trusting, he tends to be "shot first, ask questions later"
It seems hard to believe we could be targets by posting on a garden site, but I know it's not impossible. I removed the city from my address several months ago although I felt kinda foolish for doing so. Glad to know I'm not alone. Does anyone know if this forum is public or subscribers only?
Subscribers only, but there 7500 of them! We all fall into the trap of being too trusting. Without revealing any names, I will tell you that there have been incidents of subscribers harassing other subscribers, on and off of DG.
Nan, I have a number of cop friends and my BIL is an NYPD detective. Listening to them convinced me to take this more seriously a while back.
BEING A MEMBER of any group does not change the odds or inclusion of crime related activities within the group or the area the group inhabits. This group is certainly large enough to include representatives, of all that exists in life. LET ANY TEMPTATION become attractive enough and easy enough the situation will be to exciting to be ignored by someone within the group. Sorry...... but such is life.
