Basic instructions for beginners?

OK, ya'll have me hooked - I hate to not ackowledge everyone's efforts individually, but they ALL are charming and creative! ...and my work birthday cake featured a tiny fairy statue that's begging for a home...

Anyhow, it's been 100 years since I did terrariums, and know you need a layer for drainage in anything w/o drain holes. If I use one of the standard shallow bowl containers, how deep a layer of pebbles is recommended? Regular potting soil? Any other tips for newbies?
