Water Features

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

I was thinking about these on the way home. I think if we play around with a small fish tank pump and some drip irrigation tubing and fittings, we can make little water features like, ponds, streams, water falls or a spring that comes out under a rock. This is my busy time so I may not get to play with this for awhile. Wanted to toss the idea out for some of your imaginations to work on!

Oh now, there is a good idea. The sound of water would be nice.

I thought of that too, but I'm not that good with that sort of "handiness". Even a simple drip system intimidates me, so I just threw down a soaker hose, lol...

I'll be watching this thread, so that hopefully someone more inclined, can show us how to do it :0)

I was tinkering with the idea of constructing some type of water diverter (like small clear air hose tubing for fish tanks) from a rain barrel to push water through to a mini fountain in a tiny garden. As long as there was water in the barrel the fountain would flow.

What a great idea! Gosh! If any of you do that, please, please post a photo! With some instructions as well! :-)

We have a huge disappearing fountain. That could be done with a small fountain.

Oooh, Sallysblooms, that's a pretty patio. Can you explain what you mean by a disappearing fountain, please?!

There is a container of any size, this one is very large. You put a reservoir on the bottom, add the pump etc, a grate over that, then the container. Add rocks to cover the grate. There is a tube that brings water up and it flows over the container. Over and over. It disappears under the rocks into the reserviour. In the photo, you cannot easily see, but the water is over the sides of the fountain. The birds love it!

Oh, OK! I didn't notice the water over the big pot until you mentioned it. Thanks for the explanation!

Wow! That is a beautiful setting, Sally! You've done a great job there!

Thank you!

They also make some small desktop water features that would work very well in a little garden. I saw some in Walmart this afternoon. They were by the craft dept in the store I was in but not all stores are set up the same. The water circulates so would only need filled not hooked up to running water.

Great idea about the water feature. They are really common now so some of them are pretty inexpensive. I am going to have to play around with this. My favorite place in the regular garden is the water pond. Would love to have one in the fairy garden when I get one done.

I was thinking the same ting. I just picked up a tiny desktop water fountain at walgrrens for 1.50 75% off clearance, while I'm not crazy about the asthetics of the fountain part, I'm thinking of taking it apart to get at the pump, it runs on AA batteries so not expecting too much, but for that price it will be worth it for an the experiment.

wow...good for you! that is a great price! I think I'd have picked one up too! :0)

Good find Joey! Be sure to post a pic of what you come up with. Our mini tabletop fountain is spread apart for cleaning right now and I keep eyeing the parts for other uses. DH says no no, hands off, lol.

We bought a tabletop fountain, and we're going to take it apart for a mini garden fountain, but it runs on electricity. A battery operated one is a great idea!
