Hi
I came to love callas and I was looking for some that have dark foliage. Does, anybody know of any names and maybe where I can get those particular kind of callas?
Thanks
Rodica
Callas
Hi Rodica, are you sure you mean callas and not cannas? Callas either have green leaves, or green leaves with spots. They really don't get any dark foliage, like some plants do. Two varieties have maroon edges to the leaves- Black Star and Edge of Night.
Hope that helps!
Susan
Susan you helped me!! Now I know my dark edges ones are one or the other and I can now order more!! I have another question for you. I accidentall cut one of my calla in half while digging the other day. Is it a goner now?
marieortiz I had one chewed up by a treerat that came back so I wouldn't give up on it.
Susan
Marie posted a picture of a beautiful calla with dark markings and I wanted to find out what kind it would be. Now I know and I can order some.
Thanks.
Rodica
Hi Marie,
If you cut the bulb in half, it might let some rot in, I would try not to water it too much. Try to water around it, so the water doesn't go on the bulb, only on the roots. If you cut the foliage you'll probably get more foliage.
What picture? I don't see any picture, Rodica?
No foilage it was just planted and I uhmm had forgotten where :o) The picture is on the sw forum. I will see if I can find the link.

Here's the link. I think it is the 5-6th picture down.
Sorry Susan. I did not include the link to the thread, but fortunately Marie did.lol
I just love that foliage.
Marie--next time, when you cut bulbs (any kind), if you think about it, dip it in some of that soil sulfur you can get at the garden center for about $5 a 5lb. bag and let them dry overnight. Or plant directly. That helps a lot with the mold...in Houston, humidity and mold is something I know a little bit about. ;)
also sprinkle that around your LA iris and other bulbs that like acidic conditions--don't worry about using too much--its mild and organic. If I haven't overdone it yet, it probably can't be done--lol
its so mild I even sprinkle it in pots of seedlings and never ill effects
Happy 4th all!
=)
Just Beautiful Tazzy. I always loved callas but never had any luck with them. I always kept them in pots and thet rotted all the time. Since I placed them in the ground , they look like they actually have a chance. I got big, beautiful leaves and I hope to get some blooms. Are they heavy feeders ?
i dont know ?LOL
I will find out
I gave them meircle grow a week after i planted
and they are blooming after 6 weeks
I guess, I got my answer.lol
Rodicap my secret is water. They luv lots of water. I only feed them heavily in the spring when I bring them out of storage.
Dahlianut, thanks for your advice. By your sign name , it looks like you love dahlias.
I do love them too, but in Phoenix is hard to grow them. I had some luck this year, placing them in full sun, beleive it or not. I might try more next year. Do you happen to know if there are some dahlias are better in the heat than others ?
Rodicap some are more heat tolerant than others. Some in your zone plant to shade from the afternoon sun but they do need 6 hours. Pop in and visit the Dahlia Forum. They're lots of great folks with great advice ^_^ This site might be helpful for you too http://www.oldhousegardens.com/DahliasForTheSouth.asp
Rodica if you order let me know. i see one that I want.
Marie, I thought you might.LOL
I will take a look at the list and I will let you know if I will place an order.
It is because of you I am inspired!!
Thanks for placing the blame on me. LOL
