Updated pictures of my clan...and fun Bob pictures

Glenwood, IA

I finally have updated pictures of all the chickens we hatched out in February! The picture here is...our new roo. He is the son of our last roo who ended up as stew. This guy is half RIR, and half buff orpington. He sure does look just like his dad, but with extra red and black feathers. He is also very protective, and very well tempered. Although this picture doesnt do him justice. He is almost 5 months old.

Last picture...these are our newest addition. Our neighbor was mowing hay and saw a turkey running from the field. He looked and found she had a nest. He had to mow, but didnt want to destroy the nest...so he called me to see if I would take care of them. Of coarse I said yes! I saved 6 of them, and they have been incubated for a week now. I can see movement inside 4 of them, the other two I am not sure are fertilized. The question is...what do I do when they hatch??? These are wild turkey, and I thought I could just raise them outside, and then let them live on their own. We have 20 acres, and a pond and ravine...and other wild turkeys. DH is affraid we will end up with yet...some more pets!

lovin your photos! they are sure a spoiled bunch, except those "big dogs," you don't ever feed them at all, do you? LOL

pets? naw, they are JUST wild turkeys ^_^

We have wild turkeys and geese around here. Mom actually captured a wild goose last year. He names Lucy, had the opportunity to fly off but never did. I say he was a he cause he had very vibrant colors. Isnt it with all fowl, the boys are pretty and the girls are plain???

Yeah...those horses may as well be wild. They have enough land to eat year round, and they even have an automatic waterer that is always clean. I woudl even drink out of it. I think they like their home. :) I hadnt ridden in a year because of how busy we have been, and I decided to jump on my mare the other day. I was only on (bareback) for 30 minutes, and then I couldnt walk for 2 days!

The animals are all spoiled, and I like my animals more then most people...so they are all my children. I wouldnt mind if these turkeys were to stick around the farm...just dont want them living in the coop. There is not enough room in there for 4-6 turkeys!

Loooove the Bob pics!

Treat the turkey babies as you would any others, but they will feather out quicker than domestic and be ready to go outside sooner. As soon as they are big enough to be independant (about the size of chickens) turn them out, hopefully they will start to range further and further from home, though they will probably always show up for a handout.

thanks for the advice. I candled eggs again tonight, and all 6 seem to look healthy. They are one week now, but they are harder to see inside then the chickens. These eggs are very spotted. I am excited to have the chance to hatch more babies. Hopefully these turkey will enjoy making house in our ravine. We will provide a steady water source, and hopefully that works out well. Not too many turkey predators our here...so hopefully they stick around to hang out without hanging out on the front porch!
