Just the forum I need. Brug experts.
Can y'all tell me, if I plant seeds from a triple blooming brug, will I get a triple blooming plant that may be a different color or, might it be a single and totally different all the way around?
I know the only way to get a true "whatever name" is to take a cutting from that plant. I don't mind if the color is different but, I really would like to have a triple. If the seeds won't produce a triple bloomer, I don't know that I will buy them.
Thanks in advance,
Jackie
Planting seeds -will they be triple bloomers like 'Mom'
Jackie, you never know what you are going to get from a seed. It is possible that you might get a triple flower, but probably more likelythat you will get a single or double from your seed. It could keep the color of the parent but could also bloom white or another color all together.
Jarodsmom,
Thank you for the reply.
I've read alot on this forum and I thought that was the case but was still hoping.
I do like the idea of a surprise, though. :-)
Jackie
Hi, Patricia - email me when you find time!!!
Anything is possible Jackie, That is the fun of growing Brugmansia! Ya never know what you will get!
pphil,
That is what I decided too, after reading alot of the posts on this forum. It''ll be ful learning about brugs first hand.
I do have a couple in the yard that came from cuttings but they've never done real well. I've learned, here, all the things I've done wrong. I plan to fix that.
Brugs could be my next addiction!
Jackie
You need to look up SeedSprout! They are in the same town as you!
pphil1,
She, (SeedSprout), lives just a few roads over from me. I've never been over there but a friend of mine (another DG member) works for her.
You're right, I should ck her out.
Jackie
Oh gosh ! I am so envious. I buy alot of brugmansia's and seeds from Brenda at Seedsprout. What I would give to get to see what all she has growing.
I would like to see it too. lol
Could you imagine working for her? All that knowledge straight from her. I could use some of that to get mine going.

I've decided that the surprise is worth it. Who knows,...it might turn out to be something even prettier.
Jackie
I would love to see a red brug.
Can you get cutting from the red brug?
No. I actually bought the seeds at Dave's Marketplace. If you go to the seed portion of the marketplace you will find a picture of it. Of course, you'll have to flip through pages and pages 'til you find it 'cause I don't remember what page it's on. They are real pretty. The flower is red but as it gets closer to where it attaches to the plant they turn yellow.
bubba1,
The "red" Brug seeds you bought are probably Brugmansia sanguinea. Brugmansia seeds need light to germinate. Press the seed onto the soil surface to get good seed-soil contact. Keep the soil moist but not wet and they should germinate. Don't let the soil dry out. The good news is that Brug seeds germinate easily. The bad news is that B. sanguinea comes from a high altitude cool growing region. It doesn't grow well or not at all in warm or hat regions. It stops blooming in temperatures higher than 80ºF. Now if you lived in San Francisco....
I put them in moistened peat pellets and put the pellets in a ziploc bag. I have it on my kitchen counter with a plant light and it is laying on my hot pad I have turned on on low. The good news is I only did 3 seeds in case it didn't work I didn't use all my seeds. So, do you think I should put some in a pot and put them outside in the shade? I have devils trumpet seeds and brugmansia pink cherub seeds I haven't started yet. Which method should I use for them. Oh. I had decided to grow my brugmansias indoors anyway because the two I had, I had them outside in part shade. They seemed to be doing o.k. as far as where they were at, but something was eating on them.
You can put a number of seeds in a pot and prick the seedlings out and transplant them to their own pot when they have 2 - 4 true leaves. I would remove the heat pad as Brug seeds tend to rot in the heat of the pad.
With the indoor Brugs, be on the lookout for spidermites which seem to be the most common pest with Brugs indoors. They are healthier outdoors even with a few chewed leaves.
Well. I will move them back outdoors then. These poor plants. I have moved them in and out so much. We have a lot of high winds in the spring. It seemed to go on forever this spring. I kept having to bring them in 'cause the winds got anywhere from 25 mph to even 70 mph. The winds have finally calmed down now.
