How long to wait before I bring home new koi babies????

Deer Park, IL(Zone 5b)

As you all know I lost 11 koi 2 weeks ago or so. My remaining 3 koi are healing up nicely and are illness free. How long before I get new koi for my quaranteen tank and then into my pond? When are my remaining three considered "out of the woods"?? I'm dying to get more color into my pond. My three Amigos seem a bit lonely for a proper "school".

MM, I would keep the fish in quarantine at least one month to 6 weeks. That would bring you to the second week of August. Still enough time left after putting your fish into the pond for them to adjust before winter.

Edit to say....keep the New fish in quarantine....

I'm no help, but I want to know too:) I would think if you have cleaned out the QT no reason you should have to wait.

Thanks for the input. My quaranteen is only 75 gallons so I won't be able to keep too many in there.

The Midwest Pond and Koi Society recommends 3 to 6 weeks. I think you can shorten that up some if the koi come from a local supplier. Keep the quarantine tank salted. If it's a fish that was shipped then the longer period might be in order. I will confess to adding koi from my local supplier directly to the pond on arrival because I know she quarantines all her stock for 14 days. I quick dip all new arrivals in potassium permanganate. This is serious stuff. It immediately kills any fungus, bacteria or parasites that may be on the fish. If not used properly it will kill your fish. Don't even think about using it unless you have done your homework first about dosage. But, it's the quickest cure and best preventative you can get.

MM,

I get all my fish from the same koi farm. She gets the fish from Japan and then quarantines them before she opens for the season and the fish are put up for sale. The only fish other than what I have purchased from this same woman are a fish I had before I started going to this koi farm and the babies that were born in my pond. I have been going to the same place for about 5-6 years now and not had any problems. The peace of mind I get from going to the same place is well worth it.
