Spindly stemmed roses

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

The lady across the street with the beautiful roses, who helped me alot with mine, died Sunday of cancer. I miss her terribly, and will miss the help she gave me with my roses. My stems start out ok then get thin and bend, can someone help me? God Bless You Nancy.

I would guess a) they need a good feeding (fish/blood/bone or a prepared rose food) will give the rose what it needs. I feed monthly during the blossoming season with fbb and once in autumn. But most importantly is to give it a very good pruning in the late autumn/early winter. I would suggest that you look at the roses forum for pruning information, but roughly, I take mine down hard to the second outward facing eye above woody growth on a mature plant. Yours looks very young, so I would say the first outward facing eye 7-8" above the soil.

Hope this is of help, I find the RHS information is generally easy to follow and very clear - after all, they do work for the Queen
