getting hostas to set seed

St. augustine, FL(Zone 9a)

I have a variety of different hostas but none have ever set seed. Is there a trick to getting them to seed or are there just certain varieties that set seed. I got a couple of different seed trades this year of hosta seeds which grew great from seed - would love to get some seeds out of mine and start growing more that way or sharing some with others. Any one know what the trick is?

Hi Karen,
I wish I knew--I do know that some hostas produce viable seeds and others do not. I've never grown hosta from seeds. Two hostas that I know do produce good seeds are: Ventricosa and Frances Williams, however, FW does not grow true to seed.

How big are the ones you're growing from seed now?
Good luck!

The ones I grew from seed this spring have leaves that are about 3 inches long at present - not sure exactly how large the full grown hostas will be. Grew two different types that I got from seed trades this spring. Both look pretty similar at this point.

Not all hostas set seed. Some hostas are effectively sterile, setting seeds extremely rarely.

This site has plenty of hosta information if you'd like to read more....
(sorry, but I don't know how to hyperlink)
