One of our baby chicks has a hurt eye. We arn't sure what happened to it. Mhave been stung by something, got it poked by something, or the mommy hen may have pecked it (she has decided she doesn't want to be a mommy hen any longer and has been chasing away and pecking at her babies, we have booted her back to the big chicken pen and left the babies with the Blue Cochin mommy and her baby).
Anyway, it looks awful. Any suggestions on what we can do for it. It appears that right now it can still see out of that eye. We put a little collodial silver around it on the sore infected looking parts. It didn't complain too much.
Baby chick with hurt eye, what to do??
I'm not sure what more you can do. Just don't let anyone else pick on it. Bumping up for better answer.
I wish I knew, and hopefully you will get an answer. Poor baby. Hope all goes well for the lil darlin.
Come on chicken people, tell Smedgekles what to do about this baby's eye.
Else I will have to do some more google searching for chicks and eye medicine.
I put more collodial siver on it this afternoon and it did look some better. We were gone this evening picking blueberries so by the time we got home they were in the nest. My husband said it peeked out from under its replacement mommy. I'll check it again in the morning and put more collodiall silver on it.
I hope it doesn't loose the eye, sure does look nasty.
I'll keep you posted.
My first instinct was to put neosporin on it. I tried to do a search on chick chickens "eye injury" and what I mostly got was chicken recipes.
So I searched for chickens and eye and neosporin.
Two sites recommended neosporin for chicken's eyes and one said she called the vet and he said use neosporin. The other site said this: Make sure the neosporin you have does not have the pain relief med in it.
That's the best I can do for now. Hope some of these experts log on soon. I feel sorry for the little guy.
Yes good choice, and please do.
Thanks LfJ I appreciate the info. I don't think I have any neosporin but I'll check.
I feel for the little guy too. Actually I think it is a hen. I'm just glad the Bantam mommy took this chick and the other two in.
Hi smedgekles.....how's your little hurt chick doing today? That looks like one nasty boo-boo.
Christy
Still looks nasty but she can still see out of it from what I can tell. I think the most part of the boo boo is under the eye itself. We continue to dab it with collodial (sp?) silver. Hopefully the other chicks won't notice it and start bugging her. So far they are leaving it alone.
thank goodness!
Baby chicks eye looks much better. Now we have another that has the same type sore at its ear. I'm wondering if they may have been stung by something.
