Blooming in the heat

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

This is the darling double pink that had her first flush on Mother's day.. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/846212/

She is just starting to bloom again and even though the second skirts are a little less than I wanted to see.. setting buds in 100degree heat is way up there in the desirable traits I want from a seedling.. although I need to be careful what I wish for.. I rather wait for cooler weather and get a great flower than get deformed blooms in the heat that only can survive a day or two!

Either way, I am happy with this seedling. This is her second flush. It's Pink Smitty x Mae West hybridized by Brenda Delph.

I love that pink. I am rather partial to pink.

Lovely, they look like tiny ballerinas. I met Brenda and saw her operation while returning from Panama City. Very nice lady. I bought New Orleans Lady from her and have had several blooms.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

What a fantastic little performer! That's the kind of Brug I need here. The temperatures around here have been hovering between 95 and 100 since the second week of May.

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Hey Bettydee, is your heat dry or do you have the humidity. We have the humidity with the 90's and it is like sucking water through your nose when you breath!!

I only live about 20 miles from Brenda. I make a visit about once a month. I just love it there.

Hey ZZ, if you need anymore "testers" I think we could do it for you, seeing how we have the heat but in different, LOL.

Dee

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

She is just a pretty as can be! She still looks happy and frilly, even in the heat. That's the only time I usually have blooms is in the dead heat of summer... Except for Maya, I DREAM of blooms that last longer than 2 days. It's the ones that get crispy before they let me see their twangers that I don't contend with. Look at the size of your trunks! That's a pretty plant, Joyce!

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Dee,
It's mostly dry heat. You could get seriously dehydrated if you spend any time outside. Right now the temperature outside is 96ºF. The humdity is only 11%. We seem to go from one extreme to another. When the humidity rises, the air becomes saturated making it impossible to stay dry.

I try to limit my yard work during the day and to do the hard work in the evening. Sometimes I have to go out. I need to go the local nursery to get a ton of NOLO. All my Brugs have damage. A few have girdled branches. I've lost several small banana plants including my new Siam Ruby. Those grasshoppers really love young banana leaves, Brugs and my citrus trees.

If I lived that close to Brenda, I'd go broke. LOL

...if I lived that close to Brenda, I'd go broke too. LOL. Congrats Joyce, your double pink is sooooooo beautiful!!!
Kim

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Trust me Veronica, broke ain't the word for it. How about a 2nd mortgage, LOL. With the humidity so high here, I have to work outside early in the morning and just water in the evening, but watering in the evening if you don't lather up with spray the skeeters will carry you off. Hate them dern things.

The the that I have found works best for the cats is BT.

bettydee, what is NOLO?

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

bugme, NOLO is an organic bait specific to most grasshoppers and related insects. The bait contains Nosema locustae, a protozoan. Unfortunately, it works best on small nymphs and is not effective enough on adults to warrant the cost. In fact, I just got back from the nursery empty handed. The owner refused to sell the NOLO to me. He said I wouldn't see much difference in the adult population. The grasshopper problem arose a few weeks ago when adults moved into the area. I never saw any nymphs this year.

http://www.biconet.com/biocontrol/nolo.html

Barnesville, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks anyway, too late for me now.........the adult population here is about 200trillion!! Between them and the ladybugs, ouch!! They say it is due to the extremely dry weather we have here. Sure wish some of that rain would roll downhill towards the Southeast from where they don't need it........bless them.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Are there any small ones around? We have at least six different species of grasshoppers. Each hatching at different times. I noticed two different nymph stages late this afternoon so I still have a chance to use NOLO to kill the nymphs. According to the literature, the larger ones will eat the small dead ones and get the protozoans. It takes longer for this to happen, but it's better than nothing. I'm going back tomorrow for the NOLO. The nurseryman said some of his customers swear that diatomaceous earth works. He also said guinea hens are voraceous grasshopper eaters. He knows that works. My yard's protected from our cattle by two electric wires. Guineas would become coyote food without a better fence.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 7b)

Yes, there are small ones still around. The acreage is too large for diatomaceous earth and the only natural predators for them are birds, toads, and my two jack russell terriers who delight in leaping in the air after them. I just noticed my post said grasshoppers and ladybugs..........meant to say and jap. beetles. Another nuisance but, there again, the dogs like to dig up the grubs and eat them.........eeeeew! There is something to use for them that you spray to kill the grubs but very expensive and if others around you aren't using it, not sure how good it would work.

lol
They send out their sweet hypnotic perfumes
whispering to us as we sleep
buy more
buy more brugzzz
we should just be lucky its brugs and not diamonds ;-)

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Joyce, her blooms are gorgeous! What percentage are single? Does she throw singles in all her blushes? Can't wait till mine get that large. So far the grasshoppers have picked on other Brugs. LOL

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

You know Betty..I freaked when some of the first blooms opened single white.. LOL They quickly turned.. I didn't get any singles last Spring.. Only a few doubles.. then in the Fall.. kapowie! I got this! A lot that look single have stuffed skirts.. so a pic is deceiving.

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

You know, Lemon Merinque does the same thing, blooms white and the yellow is stuffed inside, very cute I think.

I will have to take a picture when it opens again. It bloomed while I was out of town last week, but has more buds.

Hi ZZ
How much sun do your Brugs get ??? I'm in Lodi and was worried about the heat.
Thanks
Dev

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

They are in the sun till about 1 or 2pm.. I have some in the garden area that get all day full sun. I thought they would never survive.. but as long as they don't dry out.. they are fine.

Personally, I don't like stuffed skirts. I've got several seedlings that are doing that and I don't care for it at all. Just me.. I like a good dropped skirt that flairs really fluffy, or just a nice single. :)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

The 3 cuttings of NOL have prospered ZZ, with one that has y'd. I should have blooms this summer and I can hardly wait. I really like your seedling; looks like a winner to me. Sure hope your cuttings are going to reward you this season with lots of bloom. It's such a bummer when a plant takes forever to bloom...

Tussee

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Cool Tussee!! My Bergkonigin is opening a bud as we speak! It is about up to my shoulders and has several nice buds.
Creamsickle is opening now too!

Thank you!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I'm drooling. I'm with you on the dropped skirts, Joyce. Until this year, I've only had 1 double blooming plant, it didn't survive my first winter with brugs, but I did get to enjoy a few blooms from it.., ZZ, Bergkonigin about to bloom, too??? Just keep posting your bloom pics, I'm LOVIN it! ;)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I hate to rub it in.. but MissEmily Mckenzie, Painted Lady, Whiskers, Gemini, Antique Lace, 2 unnamed double orange seedlings, ET, 3 seedlings out in the garden, Vixen, Bergkonigin, Creamsickle, Day Dreams, Mountain Magic, Genevieve, Rhapsody and Sweetheart are open or about to open any time.. LOL

Too busy to photo.. or just in a spot that is too hard to get a good pic.

Someone is having a brugs-heaven of a bloom this year or what? LOL. Happy for you, Joyce. BTW, don't forget to post pics.

ZZ so how many brugs do you own, you seem to have them in all colors, lucky you! I'm enjoying every single pic of yours! Clemen

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Ummmm I had 20 or 30 named varieties and 89 seedlings at the beginning of this year..

I've hauled several away... I had to. I couldn't take care of all of them.. it was so depressing to see starving wilted brugs everywhere.. now that I'm down to a manageable number, I like them a lot more. It's no fun when you have too many.. they suffer, you suffer and it's not a good thing.

I think I have 40 seedlings now.. and sadly, the number of named varieties was only reduced by one or two... LOL

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

ZZ, wow, so many, I only have a few cuttings and a couple of new ones. I certainly could never get so many brugs, i could not find the space to protect them in the cold NY winter! So lucky for you to have so many and be able to enjoy them. Clemen

Berkeley, CA(Zone 10a)

I really respect you people who have to bring thier brugs in for winter. Thats true love.
A.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Annie, you now us by now, hehe! Clemen
