Hi folks, I am new here and I am just playing/looking around. This is a late spring photo, I'm seeing how well it uploads, etc. Neat looking site.

Beautiful! Please feel free to post on the Daily Pics thread!

Batavia, OH(Zone 6a)

Beautiful pic, sawdust. Where'd you take it?

I saw one once on the Cache River in Southern Illinois. Great bird watching, if you don't mind snake infested stinky swamps. I demanded a minimum 4 star hotel after that, but no go. Got 3 stars and a tornado as I recall. What a great day!

well coo13549 you'll never believe the story on finding this one. I was on a week long winter retreat at an all inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic, trying to snap pictures of birds. This older gentlement, from here in Jeff City, told me about this unusual bird that nested in his back yard for the last two years. It sounded like a something I had never saw, so I asked him to call me if it came back this spring.

Sure enought about 2 months after the trip Guy called and I drove about 7 mile across town to this beautiflu house on the bluffs of the Missouri River and there was this Prothontary building a nest in a bird house. Not even afraid of us, we set in Guys patio chairs, sipped tea and snapped some great shots. Now are you sorry you asked, lol?

Batavia, OH(Zone 6a)

Not sorry at all, dusty. The DR, eh?

PERTH, Australia

Well, come on saw43dust, we want more of these great shots.

coo13549, what a hilarious description of your one-off encounter in the snake infested swamps (stinky type).

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Saw, beautiful bird...you are not that far north of me so I will watch for this bird during fall migration!

Coo...LOL!

Quoting:

They breed throughout MO too (and right down to the Gulf coast), look for them in wooded swamps.

Beautiful pic sawdust! THis is one bird I am longing to add to my life list! Guess I'm gonna have to go trekking through a swamp to find it!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

ooooo Rose. A wooded swamp! lucky you!

Batavia, OH(Zone 6a)

The Cache Creek actually has swamp cypress trees, couldn't believe they had those in Illinois. Perfect wooded swamp. Lower Cache is where they supposedly found the Ivory Billed, but I was on Upper Cache by Carbondale.

Good luck, Rose, have fun finding a wooded swamp in your neck of the woods. But Carbondale is close. I strongly recommend going with a kayaker that will launch the kayak in the duck weed, while you stand ladylike on the dock. Try not to wrinkle your nose and laugh at the poor guy standing waist deep in the green goo--I almost got thrown in that way. Much safer to do this while still dating!

Resin, any chance of them near Cincinnati? Guess I should check my book.

Dusty, how's that nest going?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Carebondale is great. I went to school there 20 some years ago. I remember lots of birds going through that area. We had a huge tree full of Evening Grosbeaks outside the dorm!

Batavia, OH(Zone 6a)

Mrs Ed, great school, too, isn't it? But here's the important question...How's the winery down there?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Was there a winery there? LOL. 1985 was a lonnnggg time ago. I would have loved some wine. I haven't been back since maybe 86 or 87.

Batavia, OH(Zone 6a)

Mrs. Ed, I graduated about the same time, different place. Wouldn't have been caught dead in a snake infested swamp back then. You should think about it, now, LOL. Seriously it was awesome. Cache creek. Only duck weed was at the ramp, as the wind had blown it there. I'd recommend a canoe, though. We hit underwater stumps and were afraid of sinking. And I saw a BIG water snake, could have been anything, including a cottonmouth.

Even though we were in a kayak, we had the camera, binocs, and bird book, yes we're geeks and proud, LOL. Mark was doing most of the rowing (like I said, we were still dating). So I had the book and figured out it was a Prothonotary warbler, right there.

I want to go back, but stay this time at the bed and breakfast by the winery. And bring a video camera. Maybe a shotgun for that snake. :~)

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Yep, should be in the Cincinnati area.

Wow, that is one cute bird. I LOVE the Japanese maple in the background with the cute bird house.

Batavia, OH(Zone 6a)

Dusty, you've been holding out on us. I'm just a swoonin over that little bird, not to mention her precious cottage, LOL.

Sign me,
Green Coo (and apparently my late Grandma Isabel, as I don't normally go "aswoonin'" over anything. Must be too much time in the country.)

PERTH, Australia

Sawdust, those pics of that beautiful little bird in the equally beautiful birdhouse are like something from a fairy tale. Mrs Ed's right. We haven't had enough. (Hello Marna)

I was fortunate to see a Proth. Warbler in Gatlinburg TN a # of years ago at their annual Wildflower Pilgrimage that the last th - sun in Apr ea year. Warblers are migraating thru the Blue Ridge Mtns and the Flora and Fauna along with all of the extreemly knowledgable visitors and lecturers from all over the USA and many foriegn countries make up a birder /wildflower lovers adventure of a life. I highly recomend it . Your Picture is indeed lovely. What a precious little cottage home that bird has chosen, and how blessed you are to enjoy it right up close and personal!
