Look What I found!

Yuma, AZ

Found this little gift in a cutting from Hawaii that had in fact been inspected by the DoA. Unbelievable how much damage it can do.
Sorry for the poor quality. Anyone have a clue to what type of Moth or Butterfly this belongs to?

I first noticed the cutting starting to shrivle from the top, but not from the tips. I looked a little closer and could see a small hole, which you may be able to see in the picture.

Opened it up a little only to find a gaping hole and the worm.

Complete picture of damage, whole cutting was lost. Just goes to show even though the DoA inspects your cuttings you should still inspect them when they arrive, you never know what has hitched a ride.

Yikes!
As you say - so much for inspection....

No idea what it is though.

Sorry about that, Davie. It is a good thing that you caught it early. Yes, I do know what it is. There are a few threads on it in the Pests and Diseases section of the Sticky Thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/618214/ I had a similar thing sent to me from Key Largo, FL, a few years back when I purchased from Sue70 on Ebay. A beetle even ran out of the box. Scary!

Oh boy surprise surprise no one needs any thing like that. All that I buy goes away from every body till it roots. Glad you caught it when you did.

I was reluctant to mention the B word... but Clare is right.
Be sure to notify the seller (and ask for a replacement!!)

scary! glad you caught it davie.

did you go back for that tree on sunday?

Yuma, AZ

Thank you Clare for the links, after looking at those pics, I am sure glad that I found it!
Thanks for the encouragement Hetty, I am in the process of trying to get a replacement....well see.
That's a great rule of thumb Dana, but as Dete would say I have 2manyplumeria to keep all of them isolated.
Hey Dete, I did go back, but she was not at home, so I did not want to take the tree without her there. I am going to try again this weekend...well see. Thanks again for coming down!

I think it was great that Davie actually posted the bug. So many times we hear moans and groans and never the evidence. Did anyone find out what kind of bug is was?
