I have a spot where a very tall Butterfly Bush would be ideal. It's for a mixed garden from tropical to dry, and I'd really like a white or pale pink to tower over a well established stand of red Knockout Roses. White Profusion, from what I find on line, won't reach that height, but I know I've seen some Buddleias that are nearly 15 feet.
Can anyone suggest varieties that will reach the height I need in z8b?
Thanks in advance for your input!
Need tall (8'-12') Butterfly Bush. Which is best?
Do you have a reputable local nursery? If so, they would probably know the answer to your question. Sorry, I don't know as I only have a light and a dark purple that I keep pruned down to no more than 4 1/2 feet so I can keep them deadheaded. Maybe ecrane will come along--I seem to remember her saying she has a white butterfly bush (besides, she knows waaaay more than I do, LOL).
Thanks, NatureLover. We've been working on this in the trees & shrubs forum. Now I'm trying to figure out which of the white cultivars are the best flowering: White Bouquet, White Profusion or Snowbank.
Anyone know the difference?
Hi, SilkKnoll,
FYI I just wanted to post this article comparing some of the most popular Buddlieas.
http://www.springmeadownursery.com/article_7.htm
This fellow at Spring Meadow has grown 57 kinds of buddliea and recommends a few of his favorites. I think he also discusses some of the white varieties. And talks about growth habits.
I grew a few from seed (Thompson & Morgan) last winter and was surprised I got them to grow. I think I got 5 little plants from the packet of seed (using the Wintersowing Method and basically ignoring the seeds). I also have about 8 other Buddlieas that were from nursery stock planted a couple years ago.
I think if you regularly water and feed the standard Buddlieas they will grow quite tall. Especially if you give them lots of that Alabama sunshine. It looks like the dwarf buddlieas are all the rage. I have 2 of these, (Ellen's) though, and can't really see what is so special about them. At least not yet!
And I'm going to try to start a few Buddlieas from cuttings this summer.
In some areas of the country buddlieas are considered quite invasive because of self seeding. I haven't found that to be true around here, but just in case, I dead head quite often.
Good luck with your buddleia search. I will be interested to hear more about your garden later this summer!
We have a white profusion that is now about 4 or 5 years old that has grown pretty tall...I'll go out later and measure the height. I think it is over 8' tall.
tabasco -- I enjoyed the article. It put many varieties of buddleia in perspective for me, and introduced me to the cute, new mini 'Lo and Behold.' I just got two dwarf Peacock buddleias, so I was glad to see the positive comment. Unfortunately, it doesn't have much to say about whites.
wind -- Thanks for the input on White Profusion. I'll look forward to hearing the height of your plant. Are you happy with the number of blooms? Is it really 'profuse'?
