tiny trees and shrubs

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

This is one of the ones I am thinking of using for my first mini garden. Golden Dwarf Hinoki Cypress http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/170426/

I would love to find something that resembles the giant sequoias in a mini form!

I also need to find a suitable grass or ground cover for a mini in full sun.

Any suggestions as to what to look for?

Here are some mini trees(and a "bush") I just picked up, for $10 each.

and for the groundcovers, I'd recommend the "Stepables" website. They have some great ones, that are really tiny.

Here is their best seller:

Thanks! A starting place for me. I really want to plan it all out before I rush into buying things...for a change!

That blue star creeper looks interesting. I want to create a mini landscape with forest, mountains and a stream, in sections that can be moved... I'm fed up with having to leave my garden every time a house gets sold out from under us! And if I incorporate a scale railroad The DH will have fun getting into it too ;~)

I agree...get him interested & make it a joint venture.

Another great groundcover is 'elfin thyme'. I was going to take a picture of it for you, but battery in camera just went dead.

Here is a pile of my stepables I'm gathering

I had just saved this picture off of Twogreenthumbs website, to remember the name of one of theirs...it is the same one you just got, Onewish, but spelled with a "C":

Cerissa foeteda flore pleno

She says it makes a great "rose bush"

Hey we got it!!! thanks seed for getting the ball rolling. You gals might try calling around to some of your local nurseries. I bet you would find one that has alot of little mini plants. I guess I am very fortunate in my area because my nursery has lots of little mini plants. 6 pak grasses and sedums to pick from ... and now that I am buying alot they are getting more and more little plants in ( probably just for me LOL ). I have never ordered online and had them shipped ..
to much money ? and to afraid they would go into shock and I would lose them . I just believe in buying locally I guess stuff that comes from my area. This is gonna be fun ..... Am already planning another mini garden .
be on the lookout for more of my threads coming soon.................

Suzy-I think everyone needs to see your other mini gardens. Doesn't look like they are being moved over here, so can your repost?

From the looks of it I am going to have to get DH involved just to keep him from crying when I start ordering plants! and buildings and... fountains ...lights...... at least I can hunt the riverbed and forests for fallen logs, rocks, sand etc...and I may even try my hand at making some of the props with my new dremel...

This is gonna be fun!

Acampo, CA(Zone 9a)

Yes seed I will repost them them in different threads so everyone can see them and get ideas...thanks

This is the serissa also known as snow rose. Bought as a gangly plant and I've trained it into a tree form over about a 5 yr period. I'd placed it into a trough with a few miniatures and had not finished the scene when my grandson spotted it............NO NO NO the rest is history until I can place where little hands cannot get into it. you can understand how fascinating it was to him with the little shovels, etc.

That makes a great looking "broad leaf" look for a tree!

Barnesville, GA(Zone 7b)

Here it is when in bloom. Since this one has an awkward growth habit with branches going in all directions, it requires lots of pruning to keep it looking like a tree. It's tiny leaves though are perfect for this type look.

That is really really cool. I will definitely need to get one of those...

Here is a tiny little erodium reichardii flore pleno:

the flowers are about the width of the diameter of the end of a pencil eraser.

My plant wish list is getting longer....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

here is another small jem I found the other day... says it tops off at 15"... not sure how it will be to prune yet

onewish, Santolina is a wonderful plant. I have both the upright (badly in need of pruning) and a creeping type. They are wonderful plants for a sunny area that tends to be neglected. Here is a pic of the creeping one that is now growing out on a rock bed, has never been tended (fed/watered, etc) and I'm not bragging about the neglect, just that it is in an area that I seldom work.

A plant that grows slow and makes a great looking miniature tree is Ming Aralia

beckygardener, that looks like it would be a great one for adding texture to the tree canopy.
