Well I ran across this..as a result of a few articles JJ wrote for the Dave's article section.. under the Guides and information Tab on the top of the Dave's home screen
JJ is located on Reunion Island.. just off Madagascar.. in the Indian Ocean.. he's in the cooler tropical highland of the island... his seeds had no problems reaching me in about 10 days.. and they are sprouting out nicely...now...

Yes.. I know.. the balance of payents will be hurt by this posting.. maybe the gov will pull it before daves gets me .. again. Gordon
OH.. check out the stictocadia breviens there..http://toptropicals.com/catalog/uid/STICTOCARDIA_BERAVIENSIS.htm
it's a west african native.. do you see it there in HI
that's the one that got me ... motivated to write.. Gordon
Did you have any trouble getting the seeds into the US?
YES...it is terribly invasive!!! We have a big grove of overgrown Alexander Palms and I am turning it into a VINE jungle....putting vines in there to go wild. Might as well use it for something!!!! I have that Stictocardia in there and it is really happy!!!
I also have a couple in the Fort Myers Shores area if anyone would like one, but don't stand near it too long, it'll be wrapping around your leg! I'm going to put up some chicken wire between the cabbage palms and let it form a wall there to shade some of the other plants, instead of choking them all.
good idea...but don't turn your back!!!! Isn't it sad when something so lovely turns out to be such a PEST
I had this vine and loved it. It did very well last year, started to come back this year and I think the neighbors cat paid it a visit this year and killed it. They are georgeous when in bloom!!
Well..it sounds like a hand full.. but it will stay in a container on the roof... I'll start it off in the corner and let it go along two sides...but it has till Thanksgiving to rip.. then it will be unwound and cut back.. and brought into the hallway trellis...under the skylight..and grow lighting.. that will calm it down some..
I love the coloration.... I read it was fragerant.. are there any reports on this..
LSCallas.. no .no problem.. the BE with the seeds came right
through.. Gordon
I will let you know about fragrance..I have some blooming.....
I would love some cuttings of this Stictocardia vine. I am willing to pay for postage. Is it easy to root? If anyone has seeds, I could try those instead. I have an arch that my hubby bought to string xmas lights on. The string of lights died and it is bare. Now I would like to grow some sort of vine.
Let me try to find out...some friends of mine seem to be successful with rooting it. To grow it on an arch you will need to hire someone 24/7 to tie/trim/coax/and beat it off !!!! You are so right Hettie....it could be the Plant that ate Cleveland!
This is EXACTLY what I NEED! Hmmm...now to find some...if anybody does have some please contact me PLEASE!
I saw plants in Ace Hardware labeled as Hawaiian Sunset. It has such pretty flowers. I'm still trying to get rid of passion vine that insists on climbing up my screen enclosure. The yard gets mowed quite often in our rainy season, so they don't get a chance to grow. Would this vine grow in a pot? Would that contain it from growing 'hogwild'? If I can't contain it, I guess I'll pass on this plant. The arch is in the front of the house and I don't want it to look like a jungle. LOL
It isn't the roots that are scary....it is the vine....and i don't think anything short of a neutron bomb can contain it!!!
