Hello DGers, (DGians? DGites?) I'm usually called Melis, accent on the 'lis'. I like this place very much and hope I'll be able to stay. But I'm definitely here until mid August at least, and what with the unbearably hot weather we get here in July and Aug. you'll probably be hearing from me quite a bit.
After looking around the site a bit I think I should revise my Zone: actually think it's either 5b or 6a. yIt's definitely not what I thought it was.
So: a bit about me: I have what is quite a large lot for in (small) city/town. It's triangular and very broken up. There's a triangular bit behind the garage which the husband is using to grow hops this year for his brewing, a long ugly patch at the back which used to be a dog run,the opposite side of the house, where most of the flowers are, a shady, acid-y bit in the front full of volunteer columbine,hosta,redbud volunteers, maple seedlings, poison ivy, English ivy, muguette, and a baby maple tree about4 feet tall meant to replace a large redbud which the English ivy murdered last year.
Then you roll down a steep drop, which extends across the entire frontage and come down to street level, where there's grass, two teenaged maples, a crab apple tree, and a monster mock orange I *really* should've pruned before it got 15 feet tall!.
So...it's an interesting yard. We're trying to replace all the grass on the flower garden side, and took a big step in that direction this year, purchasing a tiller and turning over a big section and planting it in roses and other perennials. I have two other projects for this year: ripping the cr*p out of the so-called herb garden, a stone square raised bed near the kitchen door, currently full of weeds and spiderwort gone wild, and ...I fprget the other because my migraines are acting up. (curses!!!) Anyway, the good news is, I've got a plan all mapped out and THIS year the DH is actually helping! This means more than you might first think, as I am one of those droopy people with a chronic pain problem, who can't get much of anything done anymore. Talk about frustration.
I know just enough to be dangerous when it comes to gardening. I want to know more. I've got a q: re: candytuft propagation I'm gonna ask as soon as I figure out the proper place to ask it is.
