Sorry for the bad pics but these are my two new baby koi. Nothing special but they were so cute I had to get them out of the aquarium at the landscape store. They are only a couple inches big. I know the one is a kohuka, but what is the black and orange? Whatever it is I think its going to be big because he has broad shoulders, looks like a bulldog or something.
They love being in the pond and hanging out with the bigger fish. Finally starting to get in there and fight for food with the others. These are the smallest koi I have, its going to be fun to watch them grow.
New Baby Koi
Evesta: Cute little babies. I can't wait until my pond health issues clear up and I can start the adoption process again! How many fish do you have in your pond and how many gallons? I just recall you saying that we were both new pond owners in one of my sick fish posts.
How are your surviving fish doing btw? Picking out new babies is definately something to look forward to:)
My pond is around 1600 gallons I think, 4 feet deep, with a bottom drain, rocks on the side but not the bottom. I have 4 goldfish and 6 small koi. I'm working on doubling the filtration right now but so far the only water problem I have had is algae and that is getting better. It will be overstocked when the koi grow to full size in a year or two so I'm already planning a proper koi pond for next year. We have lots of room for it but I better start saving up to do it right. I'm thinking 3000-5000 gallons.
My biggest koi is a kohaku named Lightning McQueen and is around 8 or 9 inches. I think it is a she, as it has a female shape and seems to grow MUCH faster then the others. My sanke named Crusty(for its clown nose) is the second largest. The runt is my ugly fish Dragon who is the same age as the kohaku, pretty sure he is a male and will stay small. Also have one butterfly named Foo and he seems to be a smallish male too.
I wasn't planning on koi, but the bug bit me:) I never thought I could like fish so much but there is something special about koi. I will use my current pond for a watergarden/goldfish pond.
My remaining boys (I believe all three are boys) are surviving. I had to release them back into the pond from the quarantine tank because my filtration couldn't keep up with the ammonia (2.0) that they were producing. My tank is 75 gallons and I have the Fluval FX on it which is way oversized but with their scales coming off from the ulcers and their nervousness and stress levels they created a lot of mess in there and I couldn't even see them at the bottom of the container. They seem a little shell shocked in the pond except for the most healthy one. Then again there are only three of them and it's a big pond and they seem to be a little lost without a school of fish with them. So, I guess because they are living it is a good sign. I am supposed to call the vet tomorrow and check in with him on their progress. Hopefully he won't ask me to look at them closely because I doubt I could catch all three of them in the pond!
BTW: Originally when I planned my pond it was supposed to be 3000 gallons but when they were digging it I knew right away I wanted more space for the fish. Even now at 4500 gallons I wish I had more space. . . I almost wish I could put a large diameter plastic pvc pipe under my new patio and connect this pond to a new one on the other side in the shade. This way the fish can swim back and forth between the ponds and under the patio . . . I am crazy aren't I?
Crazy? No! Sounds like a great idea to me... but digging out for that PVC pipe (which would have to be quite big to allow for future growth) would be tough!

BTW, Evesta, love your babies!
Evesta-how's your little ones doing? My guys are still healing and I can't wait to add a few new friends for them. Does anyone know how long I should wait after this whole fish disaster and healing process? I could have them in quaranteen right now just waiting. . .
The orange and black guy is a BIG eater. I just have a feeling he or she is going to get big quick. The little kohaku is rather shy but is starting to get more agressive at meals.
I'm trying to tame my fish to hand feed. I was suprised my most shy koi, Foo, my only butterfly came up and nibbled on my finger. My 2 shubunkins and fat sarassa Chucky are very interested too but most of the koi are still leary of me. But my most suspiscious fish is Sushi my little male sarassa. He sits under the lillies giving me the fish eye when I come over. He looks like an eel, slowly popping his head in and out, just kinda floating there. When he "strikes" he is out darting all over the pond grabbing a few bites before going back under the lillies. However, I find missing a meal makes them all more "grateful" the next time around. LOL
Glad your fish are healing mothermole, hope you can get babies soon:)
