How deep of a hole do I need to dig for my bananas?

How deep of a hole do I need to dig for my bananas? I have three of them in 10-gallon pots. I know they need to be as deep as the plants roots. But I was wandering if the hole needs to be deeper? I ask because we have rocky clay soil here. I plan on removing the heavy soil and replacing it with rich potting soil and compost.

I dont think bananas are picky. I plant mine only as deep as the roots.

rylaff, good to know. That's how deep I planted them.

The roots don't go down much - they grow out horizontally

skaz421, thanks for the info. Just what I like to hear because I planted them that way already.

Actually, my bananas grow incredible corms. In their second year, they had solid corms, about 5-6 feet diameter. I had to dig some up, and it was a chore breaking up the corms - they were rock solid.

Wow, what kind of bananas to you grow?

5-6 feet in diameter?!

I grow mine in pots so they keep growing inside during the winter months. I wish I could plant them out in the yard, but I don't want to have to store the root mass.

glen, what kind of bananas do you grow? Must be alot of work for zone 5b. I grow Manzano, Ice Cream, Rojo, Orinico and some unidentified ones.

I also dug up the bananas I planted the other day and replanted them. They were several inches above soil grade so I put them down a little deeper. Picture to come.

i don't grow any edible varieties. At least I don't think they are edible. I have Ensete vent. 'Maurellii', M. 'Siam Ruby', M. zebrina 'Rojo'. Isn't zebrina 'Rojo' an incorrect name? I seem to recall reading somewhere that this is actually M. acuminata var. zebrina (also incorreclty called sumatrana as I read as well). Anyway, those are the only 3 I have. I suspect my Ensete I will not be able to keep unless I can find a place at work to overwinter it in high ceiling area. It's already about 8 feet tall or so and quite stunning.

If successful again this year with overwintering, I'd like to try Ice Cream banana next year as well.

I thought my Ice Cream I thought was dead! Here are some pictures of some rot it had. I had to chop the stem off. The first picture is before. The black spot in the center was the rot.
