Anyone know where you might do this, wild or otherwise near Houston?
Swimming with dolphins
You'll occasionally see pods of porpoises (the smaller black ones of the species) off Galveston and Bolivar, and a bottlenosed now and then, but not sure about swimming with them as they're pretty far out. Have you called Seaworld? A friend and I were sitting on a Galveston jetty and suddenly there were about 200 porpoises; it was SO cool.
Dang I'm jealous melva!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did look into Sea World when we lived local to it. The class I would have wanted though is seriously like 200 bucks a person for a few hours. No way would I pay that....
But I am interested in somewhere local, perhaps public....
Oh man, here I was thinking you were with the wild ones. For me, it's just the sheer cost of it. I could see 200 bucks if it were like a whole family pass or something. But that was PER PERSON. But yes, I've heard of the rare horror story of swimming with wild dolphins that ended up turning on people. And there is no price for safety. Or there is rather. :)
I was at a place called The Dolphin Research Center (or something like that) all the dolphins had been captive bred, at the facility..one of them was said to be the grandson, of Flipper...who knows if that was true?
I think it was close to the $200..but in my mind, it was worth it.
It is illegal to feed or swim with wild dolphin. But my wife and I were able to go out in a boat that gets you close enough to touch them. Here is a link to the one we went on last year. http://www.dolphinconnectiontexas.com/
Oh thank you for that link! Did I miss, where is it located out of? $70 bucks for our family that'd be better! Until I can afford to splurge on the real swim. :)
Discovery Cove in Florida (owned by Sea World, I believe) was a really nice experience my husband and I enjoyed several years ago. You can go for a half or an all-day visit - includes lunch, snorkeling around their lagoon, and a one-on-one dolphin experience.
