Do I need to repot these? The one on left ,Foxwood Trail,is starting to need a lot of watering so I'm thinking it's become to large for it's pot. Champange Pink isn't quite as big but it's starting to need more watering too. Of course it could just be the summer heat but I thought I read somewhere on the forum that mini's needing to be potted up every 4-6 months....or did I dream this?*G*
P
Repot?
they both look like theey need repotting into a larger size pot.Nice looking plants.
mrsbonnie
I don't no If I am right on this but it look like the second one ( The smaller one) Has more than 1 plant growing, I would go 1 size biger pot, But wait to see what others have to say
Very Pretty
Dimmer(AKA) Kim
Thanks mrsbonnie
dimmer, they're trailers so more than one to a pot is normal.
P
You can call me Dim HAHA
I realy don't no to much about Trailer sorry
Dimmer
From what I've been reading, if a plants leaves are 3x the diameter of the pot, then it is time to go a size up in pot.
Beautiful Trailers P..really look great!
dim,
we live,we learn...LOL.
Sy,they using an awful lot of water so I think they maybe rootbound.
cedarnest,
thanks...considering all the trouble I'm having w/ my av's,it's nice to have some that are actually growing, blooming and doing well.Dodge the bullet on cycalmen mite, have the mealies on the run....now I have plants collapsing and dying. Some are green one day, totally wilted the next and never recover. Some just turn completely black. What fun...NOT!...LOL I've got tons of varieties I'm going to have to re-order...but I'm kinda scared of what's next.
P
Well your trailers sure look like they are healthy and happy P..I am beginning to think certain varieties are just more prone to having problems..hope you can get a handle on it...does make you scratch your head doesn't it?
more like ...pull my hair out.
I read on another site that standard trailers should be planted in 6" pot pans. If the trailer is a mini, then he says to cut the pot pan (which is already a short short pot) in half. Let me post a picture of a standard trailer in a 6" pot pan. (This doesn't mean I can grow good trailers) It just means I read and study.
After I took the picture I notice a nice dead leaf hanging over the side. (LOL)
I almost forgot to say that when you cut the 6" pot pan in half the height, you must put something to make the edges not be jagged where you cut. (maybe finger nail clear polish and several coats?????_)
PS>>>>>>Bonnie, you know more than I do.....you have been growing so long!
Lovely plant Gail. What's it's name?
I don't have any pans.
P
Yesterday's Valentine standard trailer
Maybe you can cut regular pots down in height?
Ah yes...had it...killed it*sigh*

Bigred: Your description of the problems you've had with your plants sounds identical to mine! I've kinda given up on AV's ... have just a couple left. I think last fall I had mites, no sign of mealies but I know I had mites - plants with hard crowns/leaves and had the same problem of some plants going from looking absolutely healthy and beautiful one day to totally wilted the next and never recovered! Arrrgh! I guess we both got "bit" by the AV Gremlins!
I love some of the trailers ... may eventually try a couple of them but don't think I will ever grow the standards again and I've never had a lot of luck with the mini ones. I had Champagne Pink at one time too, lovely plant.
Gail, that Yesterday's Valentine looks wonderful to me. Looks like one I had one time but I never knew the name of it.
Well, hope springs eternal. I tore down a bunch of plants and struck the leaves a few weeks back. Hope this batch will do better than the others ....but I still have a bunch of varieties I lost totally I'd like to replace.

Hi, to make collars for your AVs, use the styro that comes with the meat from the Supermarket. Cut in half, cut out the center to size of your pot. poke some holes all over the piece of styro (air circulation). Place under the leaves of the plant with bend side down. Or take a pice of paper towel fold it to size of 4 inches by 2 inches wide. make three, wrap saran around it and place these pieces under the leaves of course you can buy collars from Cape Cod violetry. Helene
Hello, actually I almost think that pinching off some of the smaller (inmature - will not grow bigger) leaves on the outside if each heart (center) you could leave them a while longer in the pots. Try using fertilizer 1/4 tsp. per gal of water each time you water the plants to get a consistant growth. Also since you use clay pots you are apt to use more water in summer.... May this is helpful Helene
I got them potted up and they're looking good...knock on wood. All the leaves from plants I tore down have babies and I've been visiting AV sites looking for leaves to replace the var. I lost so I guess I'm not totally done with av's yet. I've been looking for more var. of epsicias too. It's so hot I hate to order anything just yet.
I've used styrofoam saucers before for leave supports.

I've had that "collapse" thing happen, also.. generally when my plants were neglected and I was just throwing water at them once a week... I think it most likely was due to plants getting overly wet and getting root rot (wilting from root rot looks the same as wilting from lack of water -- when the roots rot, no water can get to the leaves).
Those trailers look lovely! I've heard of using saucers from larger ceramic pots as pots for trailing AVs (be sure to drill a hole for drainage. I have also found that the containers used for cole slaw, carrot-raisin salad etc. at Chik-Fil-A are perfect for mini trailers. I poke a few holes in the bottom with a hot kebab skewer, and I'm good to go. If I'm lucky, I can find a decorative container to use as a cache pot, with the black plastic dish as a liner.
that sounds like a good idea.
I'm pretty busy this time of year so I'm not real consistant with the watering.
