Digitalis purpurea peloric form

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

I thought I'd share some pictures of a strange looking mutant foxglove that I found growing in the garden. After a bit of searching I discovered that it's a Digitalis purpurea peloric form and not terribly uncommon but I've never seen one before.

Here's a closer picture.

And a closeup of the inside of the mutant flower. It's like several flowers fused into one.

How striking! I've never seen them before either Sandy. It almost looks like a cross between two different plants that couldn't figure out what it wanted to be when it grew up :-)

Very cool Sandy.

Cool. Mine all look like the rest of yours. What do I have to feed them to get the same thing happening?

It really is a mutant form so it's just a fluke....I think. There is a seed company that sells seeds but they don't guarantee you'll get any that look like this. My dad said there was one like this in the garden about 15 years ago.

Wow, how interesting. Never seen the likes of that before.

To nightowl2. I have seen this foxglove before!! At one time, many years ago, I moved one from a clear cut area to my home. Saved seed from it. Each year the top flower became smaller, until the form was lost.
Save seed from it!! and plant it where you know where it is. You will be surprised at the form of that top flower.
One time, I saw this one in a seed catalog. Did not buy any, but have since hunted and hunted for it, and never saw it again!
Thank you or sharing about this unusual flower!
What am I doing on the Canadian forum? Checking it out for a friend. And glad I did, because I found your picture and info!
I live in Chimacum Washington, USA, on the Olympic peninsula.

o how did I mess this. I'm with WillieB. Save seed. Save seed. That is so cool.

Oh dear.....too late. I've been pulling out all the foxgloves before they go to seed so I don't have a million of them coming up, so I'm afraid that one is long gone.

LOL nightowl. It's so relative isn't it. Weeds for you and I'd kill to have foxglove.

wow digging_dirt. You have moisture, rain and snow, don't you? I've read about those in Cowtown fairytale books.

1) lose the grass. You need to keep the big thing in the middle of the garden to sleep and shower in but grass? 2) I'm working on a Trans-Continental Weather Transporter where we would send you dry and you would send us wet. Because I don't have a scientific bone in my body I wouldn't hold my breath on this. Where is Spok or Scottie when you need them?

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

Could you get right on that, though, dahlinut? We all NEED one of those there Trans-Continental Weather Transporters! A setting for 'perfect weather' would be awesome, if you could swing it - even if you could only use it once per season. Just think how rich and famous you'll be....

you can have as much of the wet stuff as you can handle.
